Which was the most expensive console ever released? 3DO or AES?

How do PCE games look when played through the module on the LA? I've been curious if the device makes the games look better on the various PACs.

they look nice actually very good and if you play a game on cd the laseractive also has an optical output the sound is awesome .

my english sucks sorry for that:)

When you add in games the AES cost more. System itself the 3DO cost WAY to much. I'm a big 3DO collector but fully admit the system should not have launched at more than a third of that.

I just picked up an FZ-10 with Doom. What games do you recommend? I'm a shooter guy.

I heard there are porn games for it? hehe

IMHO I have 2 of the best games for the system which are Gex and Road Rash.

Unfortunately the system imploded before it hit full potential but you can look up shooters on the game list and watch gameplay on youtube if you search the name.

There are soft core video discs that only play on it. Also plumbers don't wear ties is going to be the "porno game" but... just see for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyaF_gCKWsI

Actually, Plumbers dont wear ties is nowhere near porn. It is rude and crude but thats about it. Its a very sexist slideshow game which gives you certain choices along the way. No one i know who are into 3DO for actual gameplay bothers with that title. There are NO porno games on the 3DO. What exists are as mentioned some softcore titles, both western produced but more commonly asian. I have a couple of the western ones and they are all VERY softcore and could not classify as pornography, in my opinion anyway. Get the real games instead. Games that defined the 3DO. Not just the ports that were the best on 3DO. Sure, Gex and Road Rash, not to mention Need for Speed have their best ports on 3DO (NFS actually started on 3DO), but id go for the exclusive 3DO titles first. Those three games in particular are pretty easy to find and can be picked up whenever. Not so much the case with some of the exclusive titles id recommend to people first.

But i agree with finding a games list, checking out the gameplay videos on youtube, and decide for yourself what you want for your 3DO. It really is a great console, and still retains that "exclusive" feel, that each console had back then, with the majority of games not being multi format.. Megadrive had one feel, Snes another, Jaguar a third, 3DO a fourth etc.. Not like today when exclusive titles are very rare and far between compared.

I respect your assessment. however, I must stand by when I said Road Rash. the game was simply head and shoulders above its predecessors and many other games and systems, and in fact was a straight up re-make and re-imagining that defined the series. Full Motion Video, legendary licensed music, revolutionary gameplay and graphics, and crisp controls. Spades. Spades everywhere.

Gex was not a port, it was the main SKU. anything else Gex was ported or a sequel. Gex was the mascot for the 3DO, much like Mario was for Nintendo and Sonic for Sega. This was only downplayed later when the 3DOs fate was certain. Simply for the fact that the developers pulled a Sega and developed for other systems to pay the rent and bills.

I wasnt being too specific about ports, meaning i didnt mention the three different games and which consoles they originate from. Ill do that now. As you said, Gex was first released on 3DO yes, and later ported. The Road Rash game is i believe also a 3DO first release (not the franchise, the GAME in question) and later ported to Mega CD, maybe other formats too? Need for Speed was first released on the 3DO, later released on other systems, but changed significantly from the original 3DO game and much more "arcady", than the simulator released for the 3DO.

Gex however was never an _official_ mascot for the 3DO, and i disagree with the article on that. You can argue that he functioned as one, but i disagree with that info based on that the 3DO company only designed the hardware, and released them on license to manufacturers. It did see time as the pack in game for the FZ-10, at least in north america. Its a great game either way, but again, also pretty easy to find.

Road Rash for 3DO is a great game i agree, but its common and thats why i said there is no rush to get that title in particular, if you choose between that title and a more uniquely 3DO type of game.

In no way have i said these games can be passed over entirely, nor should they as they are some of the best games for the system. But they arnt 3DO gameplay defining titles. They are much too conventional for that.

My point was to check out the unconventional, and more 3DO defining titles out there (which arnt necessarily exclusive to the 3DO either, but designed for it).

This said, i also respect your opinions and dont need you to agree or disagree with me.

On second thought i now realize the word "version" instead of "port" wouldve been the correct phrasing for what i ment to say originally. My english is good, but not perfect.

I did own a 3DO for a while but if I remember correctly I obtained it through a console swap but I do recall it being expensive new in shops though.I always remember the Amiga CD (not the CD32) being really expensive too.

I been thinking about picking up a 3DO for a while, what exclusives can you recommend? Cuz i mostly only seen ports like some of which you mentioned and Alone in the Dark and so on.

I don't know shit about the 3DO, but the pimped port of "Star Control II" was awesome. Nowadys I play the open source "remake" quite often and can highly recommend it ;)

To be honest with you i used the exclusive term loosely, as i think many of the formery exclusive 3DO titles were ported to Windows for PC... But I dont think Icebreaker ever was ported? Other originally 3DO games worth checking out were battle sport, blade force, star fighter and fifa.

Sure you arnt refering to the Commodore CDTV? Which effectively was an amiga, but looked like a PC.

Curious... Have you gotten your PACs re-capped yet? BlueBMW consistently mentions the horrors of PACs that have died from capacitor self destruction.

As far as I know the PAC's I own are still original. I'm not 100% sure where I have them stored at the moment so can't easily check. And you've got me kind of worried about them now...

You should PM BlueBMW about them, he posts on here sometimes. The Sega and NEC PACs are full of caps. When they leak, they eat the surrounding traces and chips. Or at least, that's what BlueBMW said happens.

The 3do has a fantastic port of Wolfenstein, it might be the best version. If you like space shooters Wing Commander 3 is awesome, it's the best version imo.

I really haven't dug to much into the library, mostly because I always seem to be playing Wing Commander 3, Super SF2T, or Wolfenstein when I hook it up.

If anything, the Neo Geo was at least an incredibly expensive console that was actually worth it. All that other shit, you were just paying for technology that had potential, which was never realized.

I should find them and pop them open for sure.

And I don't recall seeing BlueBMW's posts yet. I don't have a blue BMW though, just a black one and a green one. You think those'd be good enough to get a reply out of him?... :lolz:

True. Just the downside of things being that the 3DO & CD-i were expensive hardware-wise, but the games were semi-reasonable. While the AES was expensive hardware-wise & software-wise. When I sold my AES you could get a brand new SNES w/game & two controllers for less than the cost of an AES cart. Which was one of the reasons I was stupid and sold mine.

interesting to note when the SNES and Genesis were a strong presence at home, I think at the time people did tend to think that each system had a mascot. Neo Geo was a little different as it was arcade games played at home. even Playstation had Crash Bandicoot or Spyro the Dragon

Agreed in that most systems have their mascots, but i thought we were talking officially endorsed mascots.. I dont see Gex as officially endorsed by 3DO. Maybe he was, but not to the extend other mascots were. You never saw Gex in any other context endorsing the 3DO company like sonic did for sega, mario did for nintendo. bonk did for pce etc..

Back then, Super SF2 Turbo was the only game my friends would play on the 3DO, since it was the only home console port available at the time. But everything else on the system was being ignored.

Thanks, guys! Just what I was looking for. I've watched a bunch of top 10 and top 25 games on "X" system on youtube. They get the main games but there are always hidden gems for every system. I planned on getting SF2T, Road Rash, Gex, and a handful of others. But its great to ask someone who collects a certain system because the know them more intimately.

I bought a 3DO when it came out. It was awesome.

20 years later, have fun collecting shit CD-ROMS, cardboard and daisy chaining your controllers together.

The Car Marty was about $4,000 or so if I remember right, and you still needed to buy the Navi Kit + Monitor or Home Kit in order to use it.

Excluding the CPS Changer, it was the first arcade perfect port of any SFII iteration. I love the 3DO arrange soundtrack, which really nailed that old school MIDI feeling, and I think it's the best rendition of SFII's music besides the CPS2 Qsound. They were nice enough to include it in Hyper SFII's PS2 release.
