What to do about hardMVS...

So, for those of you who have submitted labels, or pictures, or questions or even just checked the site - it has become pretty obvious that I have not updated anything in years.

Sorry about that.

My current job has me on the road pretty much full time, and real life tends to fill in the rest of the blanks for any hours at home so I just don't have the time to keep things updated like they should be.

And to be completely honest, I have totally forgotten how to even update the label database to add anything to it.

So I find myself at a crossroads.

I'd like to think that hardMVS is still relevant to some extent, but it is obviously in need of a more focused manager if it is to stay more current, and I just don't have the time.

So, my question is this;

Is hardMVS worth maintaining? If so, is there someone who is willing and skilled enough to take on the task?

There is no offer of pay, just credit on the site and a nifty hardMVS.com email address. I will still pay for hosting, but that is about the extent of it.

I also have about 20 manuals that need to be scanned and uploaded as well.

So what say you?

well I am really basic with my web design and graphics and I couldn't really add much to the site content wise so I wont volunteer, However I use the site constantly, its a important resource to me and I definitely want it to stay around.

I'd say if Shawn is willing, just have it moved to the n-g.com servers keeping the same format. IE: www.neo-geo.com/hardmvs I can't imagine the added bandwidth would be too great.

Briggs, you've always been one of my fav guys here. I still visit hardmvs and I'd hate to see it go down. I'd be more than happy to help you with this.

Edit, but there may be someone else who has more time as well. The ng.com idea isn't bad either.

I got into Neo Geo around a year ago and remember your site coming up often when I was searching around for MVS related info that I needed. I found it very useful and don't think it needs to go away.

Briggs, man been a long time, hope you're doing well otherwise! Hardmvs is still a place I visit from time to time to get reference material. I can help out with scanning or any other low tech stuff.

I have used it twice within the past 6 months or so - it's not the amount of times you use it but how many times it saves your skin.

It's one of my go-to resources. Unless there's a strong substitution, I say keep it running.

Thanks for creating and taking care of the site (passively) all these years.

Your site is a great resource for MVS stuff and it would be a huge loss if it was to close.

I used to write Web Sites (HTML, PHP, MySQL) and still do now and then. I would love to get involved with the site. Unfotunately, I too have life commitments and could not do it single handed, so if there are others I am sure we could all do it together.

I do like the idea of perhaps pulling it in with NG.com, it would make this site an even better NG resource. But on the flipside, it would be a shame to lose the existing domain name.

Thanks for all the input.

The main thing I need someone to take over is the label project. My mySQL skills were never anything worth mentioning, and what I did have is long gone from atrophy.

The hosting is supposed to renew the first week of February and I would like to move it to a different host, so this seems like the right time to do something. No way do I have the skills to move the label database and have it work again on another host.

Second would be scanning the dozen or so manuals I have and getting them into PDFs to post on the site.

Third would be taking submissions and posting them in the appropriate section.

All the technical questions would be directed to the tech forum here, as they should have been years ago.

I am not really concerned with a redesign - part of the sites beauty is the fact that it is ugly as hell.

I am more than happy to turn all this stuff over to a few people who are dedicated to keeping it up and running. I will pay for the hosting and domain, etc.

EDIT: Not really opposed to the NG.com idea either, it is definitely an option if Shawn is up for it.

I also use the site as a reference and would hate to see it go. Unfortunately, I don't have the skills you need to help.

I am a modder and I use the site quite a bit, I really wish you would not only maintain it, but EXPAND it! :)

To me, HardMVS is an important collection of Neo Geo info. I would hate to see it go.

Have you ever thought about porting everything over to a content management system (joomla / wordpress etc etc) then just giving a few people off this forum user accounts so they can log in and add 'latest news', 'new manual scans' etc to wherever is needed.

Being a recent Neo-Geo noob, I really can't stress how much I have referred to the hardMVS site, for various reasons. I really do hope that this site finds both a good new home and new "caretaker".

I may not visit it much but I know I'd be in a world of pain if it ceased to exist.

If someone takes this on and needs some help. Let me know. I've been doing web design for 10+yrs. I haven't done a ton of SQL but i've done just about everything else. I'm also the in-house CSS expert in my office.

Keep the domain even if you end up transferring to the NG servers. You can always setup the domain to point to a subdirectory or subdomain.

If someone takes this on and restructures (or renames) the webpages they NEED to setup 301 redirects on the server. That way you won't loose page ranking with Google and other search engines.

I love the site. I like it's simple layout and all the information it provides. I do want it to be expanded, but not to the detriment of it's ease of use.

The only suggestion I would make is make some of the images more detailed. I guess higher resolution is what I mean. I love the tables and the steps showing things, but I get a little disapointed when I can't click on an image to make it larger.

That aside, I really look forward to any progress made on the site.
