What makes a collector different from a gamer?

I'm new here but have been looking through past posts and have noticed that their's a fine line between a Neo collector and a Neo gamer. I have recently bought a system and am thinking about buying a converter and buying MVS games because they are less expensive. Though I'd like to collect, I don't have the funds, seeing how getting a system and an !arcade! converter is around $600 alone. Even though I want to collect I can not possibly afford it, so I'm thinking of going the MVS route so I can still be a part of this great Neo scene. Give me some feedback and tell me if I should go with MVS or try to get a few expensive carts.

Collector (typical): rich , money sucker, love to show off his/her collection most of time

gamer (typical): average income, love to play game and discuss with other gamers. Love to show his/her collection if need.

Collector: Will have some overrated but rare games in their (ahem) collection, like Burning Fight, LoSJ, and Brikin'ger and not be willing to part with them- because they would like to be as complete as possible. Must have every NeoCD title as well and won't stop until they can get ahold of the original front-loader system.

Gamer: Won't touch LoSJ, because it is such an incredibly wank effort. Wants mainly to play the games and is more apt to lean toward MVS carts.

I started my Neo stash with MVS games, to play the games I always wanted to but could never afford. Then KOF2000 came out, and I decided to buy it new. It changed me from Neo gamer to a Neo collector.. I started buying everything on Home Cart and selling off some of my MVS carts to do so. Recently I changed my gaming mind again... I realized what I was spending on Home Carts and thought damn, I could have sooo many more games to play if I sold off some of my Home Carts. Thats what I did... I'm re-builing my MVS stash and began selling off my home carts and my other old game collections. I only focus on game I will play, not display. Don't get me wrong, I love having my home carts, and I'll keep some of the ones I wont save a lot of cash on, but MVS is te gamers dream. With the help of JKurtz, I have the home options on my MVS board.

Oh wait, what was the topic? I agree with all you guys.. heh

I'm a gaming collector. I want nice copies of only the best playing AES games. I take care of them, but I play them. I don't have to have all the rarest games, but I do feel a need for all the best playing games. I like to share with others, but if I ever start to rub it in people's faces, SMACK ME ON THE BACK OF THE HEAD PLEASE!

IMHO, simply put, gamers tend to be more light-hearted and have fun then uptight collectors.

Hmpf... I liked Burning Fight. I used to play it all the time in the arcade.

Now Mutation Nation on the other hand

Besides, some collectors are eccentric.
However, if you want to see a poster-child for collectors, check out John Barone's pick in the collection page (he's the ex-boss who helped finally sink SNK-USA).

Why don't some gamers post up collection pics? That page was never meant to be the big, bad, "bigtymer" page. And yes, I know who came up with the latter term -the more reason to avoid it.

You can be both you know. If you really like a series and want the box art, buy the home cart, but if you just want the game to play and dont care about art and stuff, get the MVS. Like for me, I LOVE the Samurai Shodown series so I bought all 4 home carts. But, I'm really not a big fan of the KoF series but still like to play them so I'll get the MVS. Its all up to you man. No one here really cares either way, just as long as you are a fan.

His collection isn't so great. If you look closely, you will see several duplicates. Quantity, not quality, hehe. I have that issue of replay, so it is easier to spot in person.

A gamer buys all the games he enjoys. A collector will buy all the shit titles as well. Dead simple

Wow! I couldn't have but it better. Buying a game because it's rare regardless of its gaming quality is madness.

I like Burning Fight! as well, Bobak! Who are you to mock the Holy Grail of Neo Gaming, Mutation Nation, though?

I own primarily MVS carts, and will be liquidating my home carts as soon as I find a good scanner to scan their insert with. I try to keep all of my games in "collectible" condition, however, although my reason for doing so is that the game will last longer being well cared for, so I will get more gameplay out of it.

Here's my two cents:

Collector:
Dogmatic about owning and playing original copies of games--especially games they want to play. Rarely (if ever) resorting to emulators or cdrs. In the majority of the cases they prefer to have coplete copies of games (including spine cards). Might
pick up a game that he/she can't play due to language barrier or crappy game play if the game has a cool cover and or the price is right for their budget.

Gamer:
Will play games by any means necessary and is rarely bothered by cdrs, loose copies of games, emulators, or just sticking to the arcades just as long as the game can be played. Won't buy a game that he/she can't play.

Completist:
A certain percentage of collectors are concerned about owning complete sets. Will buy games that he or she can't even play just as long as the game is part of the set.

i simply think that a collector is somone who will buy a game that can be really expensive but suck ass. and they wont play a certain game if its rare and stuff like that. and i think a gamer is somone who just likes to have fun and atually play the game.

I think the best way to tell the difference is the buying practices of the two:

The collector buys one copy of a game, burns a copy, and puts the original on his shelf, never to be touched until it is put on eBay two years later, for twice the original price.

The Gamer buys one copy, then buys another. The gamer knows that the first copy is going to see heavy playing and lots of travel, and knows it will get fucked up. He loves the look of the disk as much as the content. Soulless CD-R's just don't cut it. His back-ups are store bought.

The collector purchases exclusivley from NCSX, Babbages, Software etc., and other fine stores. He would never stoop to going to Sears the first week of January to see what videogames are on clearance, because he knows anything of potential value has already been purchased.

The gamer shops at all the places the collector does and more. If store X has been cleaned of title X, he knows one of the best places to get games is the used bin at Blockbuster/Hollywood Video/wherever. So many great games for so little, even if they aren't "Mint-in-package". He can always find another copy and cannibalize it to make one complete copy.

The collector will try to save cash by using 3rd party prepipherals. More cash for that mint copy of Harvest Moon at walmart he can sell for $100!

The gamer purchases only first-party merchandise. He knows it won't let him down, and if it does, it will be replaced. To him, it is money well spent.

The main difference between a gamer and a collector is that for the player the Pleasure of playing is the only important thing.Excuse me but quizz games in japanese language are very limited(not their price)

Even if you could read Japanese, who plays those for any length of time?

Gamer plays games for the sake of fun and winning. On top of that, gamer enjoys the adrenaline rush. Collector is an obsessive or compulsive buyer who has once been a big time gamer. Both set out to accomplish their task with passion for the love of the game but at different perspective.
