So wash it all away, push the reset button, do whatever you like. Clear away all the shit and wash all the muddy confusion off and you have the original concept.

That's what it all comes down. And if Capcom retcons the history and changes the character, so be it. Everyone will relate to these characters differently depending on their past experience and nostalgia, so it doesn't matter in the end who Poison really is. If the design is wicked hot for a pixelated character, then so be it.
I only pay attention to the characters as they pertain to the time I discovered them. To me, Samus Aran has purple hair, not this blond invention meant to sell games.

I guess it comes down to how you define "original version". If you mean "concept" as in the sketches and notes drawn and written during the diesign process, then boom, what happens to all the Street Fighter characters ever created? Because many of them were drastically different in name, background, appearance, fighting style, etc., to what we know them as from the games. But if you mean "original version" to mean their first in-game appearance, then how are you making the call? The first time Capcom ever made any mention of Poison's gender in either direction was to tell us s/he was a newhalf. So... Is there some third version of "original" you think we should be considering? Some mysterious "first" version that exists in your mind but without benefit of any documentation whatsoever?

Where it's coming from is in my initial perception of the character from a 90s era video game that didn't require controversial sexuality because I don't believe it existed until the SNES controversy.
Why would they explain Poison's sexuality at all? What's the point? If they wanted a transgender character in there, they would have made it more obvious, IMO. They didn't because they didn't see the shitstorm that the SNES release would cause. And that's where the accordian ride on statements and materials began
Ono's comments, I believe, are that the character as presented in the original arcade verson of Final Fight was as a woman because they didn't think it woudl turn into this big deal that people would complain about beating up women in video games. All the convoluted mythology came afterwards, and until Capcom comes out with a definitive statement, once and for all, that she's a gender bender, I'm just not buying into it.
For the record, if they came out and just plainly stated it, I'd accept it. I really don't care what the gender/sexuality is. But until Capcom tells me, in exact terms, what she is, I'm going with what I believe she is based on my own beliefs of the original intent of the character. And I don't think my opinion is so unreasonable as to be without merit.
