Watched the first Fatal Fury OVA (Legend Of The Hungry Wolf) for the first time in probably 25 years last night. It was alright, pretty apparent that they only had the first 2 games to go off of at that point though. The animation was serviceable but nothing amazing, cleaned up nicely on the blu-ray remaster. I'll probably watch the second one (The New Battle) tonight, I remember that one being a step up.

The Motion Picture is probably still the best of the 3 even though it has the least to do with the games.

New Battle has the song Calling, which has THEE raddest baseline.

Just about to finish this, first time with any Macross content. Fun stuff.

I still don't like the fact that macross plus bluray release is crunchyroll exclusive beside the price.Still i'm looking forward to macross dyrl coming to 4k next year.

The New Battle was pretty good (except for Tony, fuck that little turd) it was definitely a step up animation wise. A lot more fan service as well, it was nice to finally see the POWAH GEEZA!

And yeah the end credit song slaps.

I get the feeling that might have been the only way Plus got a US re-release.

Rewatching the 90's Berserk series, hadn't seen it in at least 20 years. Someone uploaded it to YT with all the intros, endings and recaps removed so you can just binge it with no interruptions. Knocked out 5 episodes last night. It doesn't hold up as well as I was hoping. Not even in comparison to the manga, just as an anime it's really inconsistent and often incredibly cheap looking.

Berserk doesn't really have a consistently good anime adaptation.

If I had to pick one that I like over the others, I'd go with the recent Memorial Edition, which is a restructuring of the 2012 film trilogy into half hour episodes with some added footage. The Bonfire of Dreams segment was added back in (criminal that it was ever removed) and, I think, the love scene with Guts and Casca has some extra dialogue that wasn't in the theatrical cut but if I'm being honest, I don't remember right now.

It's amazing to see that despite the things that were omitted for that adaptation, it really works well in 24 minute installments.

Yeah wasn't rightstuf was suppose to ? Then they got bought out by crunchyroll so it changeover to them.
Yeah RightStuf had these grand plans that on paper and given their history were golden. Damn near all the only Macross stuff we never got, Gundum on physical media, more niche anime releases on physical media ie Captain Taylor and then Sony came in and said "we want all the money".

It's probably not going to happen.

Sony only wants the gaming ane anime assets, whereas Kadokawa wants to sell the entire company as a package deal.

Been rewatching the Patlabor OVAs, I forgot how goofy and fun these and the TV series are. I feel like most people are mainly familiar with the movies which are excellent but completely different in tone and style.

The late 80’s and early 90’s was just such a great time for anime, there was just so much charm and you really feel the love the people making it had for what they were doing. There’s also a sense of relatability that seemed to pretty much disappear by the late 90’s.

Looks like Hulu is getting a bunch of Macross stuff in a couple days. I had heard that it was going to be Disney+ exclusive but I guess not.

Looks like the following series will be there:

Macross 7
Macross Frontier
Macross Plus
Macross II
Macross Delta

Nothing on the original series or DYRL just yet. Macross 0 is also suspiciously absent from the list.

The original series and movie omissions don't surprise me. They probably want to monetize those in a different way since they're the ones everyone still remembers the most fondly.

Or it could be an issue with the rights to the soundtracks, since that's a gay little detail that always seems to hang these releaees up. Mari Iijima's music may be owned or co-owned by another company in Japan. I couldn't say for certain this is the reason for the omission, however. I'm just speculating here.

I still have my original Animeigo box set for the original series from the early crowdfunder, before crowdfunding platforms existed. One of the treasures of my physical media collection. I have a bootleg DVD of DYRL that I bought from the JBC Video Store at Mitsuwa before they closed and that is basically a 1:1 burn of the Japanese release, but it's pretty bare bones. And the only other Macross series I care about, I just bought the LE for that from Crunchyroll back in October.

I'd watch the other series but I won't buy a sub to do it.

Also, fuck Harmony Gold. Pains in my goldurned ass for this. And fuck Tatsunoko for renewing the shitty deal, while we're at it. Studio Nue and Big West should have had the freedom to do as they wanted with this outside of Japan a long time ago.

I keep forgetting this is a thing, because they've all been on streaming here forever.

-Hulu and Disney + are synonymous now…Hulu was acquired by Disney. Logging into D+ gets you into a pane where Hulu is one of the choices, like National Geographic, etc.

-no DYRL or anything w/ OG Macross mecha in it, for NA territory re: stupid Harmony Gold strikes again.

This is pretty fucking cool. @SouthtownKid go to this and let me know if the Giant Robo remake from the 90s (and that I got my online handle from) gets any rep.

Ah, Sunshine City. I haven't been there since the 1980s. Right near there used to be Japan's first anime shop, Animate, which I used to visit after school when I was an exchange student. It was only the size of a large closet, but I loved spending time there. Now we have a branch of Animate in the train station department store downtown in the much smaller city I'm living in today, that's easily 4 or 5 times the size.

That exhibit looks cool, but I don't go anywhere I don't have to during the winter. Maybe if it shows up locally. I did visit the International Manga Museum in Kyoto last year, which kicked all kinds of ass. https://kyotomm.jp/en/ They have a cafe next door with illustrations on the walls done by a bunch of visiting famous comic artists.

I wouldn't miss harmony gold if they simply went out of business that's for sure.Macross license itself is a absolute mess to begin with for who owns what.I'm the same for macross dylr i have also have a bootleg of it on dvd.Though recently macross dyrl just got the 4k treatment and it has english subtitles so i'm looking to import a copy asap.

Canon updated, but unenthusiastically updated. However, updated with an understanding because when that wind chill hits your bones you know. That Asian wind chilld hits different. Yes, it's true. I confirm it. I canonized Asian winter wind chill.

Just like a lot of you, i have a soft spot for 90's anime. I rewatched the Street Fighter 2 animated movie. That shower scene with Chun-Li and then the fight with Vega/Balrog is so good.
Also watched Golden Boy for shits and giggles.
