Knights of the Round (arcade) - yeah, thanks to you goobs in the movie thread talking about Dragonslayer and Excalibur I've been playing this for the past week. I have very fond memories of playing this at the movie theater as a kid, despite never getting past level 2 or 3 because the movie was about to start. The things I liked about it as a kid - the character design, setting and graphics - still hold up with me as an adult and capture the imagination.
It's a beat 'em up that bears more similarity to Golden Axe than Final Fight - smaller sprites, ability to ride horses, and slashing with swords in a medieval setting. I originally thought some of the bosses were also based on Arthurian legend, like the final boss Garibaldi, but apparently all of them were original characters by Capcom. Speaking of bosses, the first level boss, Scorn, who later becomes a common enemy, really spoiled me. His design, laughing taunt, and trouble getting up when knocked down easily makes him the most interesting boss in the game, imo. The other bosses were fine, but none of them had as much character as Scorn. Come to think, Garibaldi himself was a sprite swap of an earlier boss, the Silver King.
The game is also well-remembered for its leveling up system, where Lancelot, Arthur and Percival get upgrades to armor as they level up (Percival going bald and growing a beard being the biggest change). As well as this being my first time playing through the game with all three characters to get the maxed out level of 16, it might also be my first time playing to consciously recognize that the level up system is also purely cosmetic - certainly you feel stronger as you get more armor, but your attacks do just as much damage in the latter levels as they did in the first level. After realizing that, it felt like a gimmick but did add to the replay value of the game so whatever.
All in all, still a great arcade game - maybe my only complaint would be the game shot its load creatively with the first level boss as the others couldn't match it, aside from the Iron Golem boss. Still fun to play through. Getting a special ending for reaching the max level - which is only possible playing by yourself, and doing things like cutting the treasure chests to get more points and killing the same type of enemies in a row for score multiplier - also would have been appreciated it. Nice ending credits music.
Careful Arthur, that armor won't protect you...
