Playing the same things as last week, but I added Stardew Valley on Switch into the mix.

I watched a video about the creator and it made me want to try it out even though it's not usually my kind of thing--definitely been digging it and I get why people are into it.

Busy work couple of weeks so I’ve been playing some games to relax and decompress when I get home and am too tired to do any else

5/25/25

Switch
Strikers 1945 III

Karate Kid Street Rumble- I liked this. Beat it once I figured out the flying sidekick did lots of damage.

Arcade Archive RyuKyu - I liked the PC Engine version

Dreamcast - Hooked up my VGA Box to my Benq monitor

Three games I was never crazy about in the series but liked them more after revisiting them

Virtua Fighter 3
Sega Rally 2
Rippin Riders

Wii
LA Machine Guns and Gunblade NY

Been out of town a lot and life has been stacking up, but made some time today

Xbox One
Gears 5 - final playthrough to cap out the series, I this we're getting bored of the third person cover genre.

Switch
Unicorn Overlord - such an addictive RTS , the combat flows fire emblem with modern aesthetics well and the story is pretty good.

Mobile

Street Fighter Duel
Wizardry Variants Daphne
(I am addicted to this game, playing my account shared on PC as well)

PS5

Lords of the Fallen 2.0

SWITCH

Goblin Slayer Another Adventure: Nightmare Feast

PC

Vincictus: Defying Fate (pretty polished for an alpha, Devil May Cry style hacking and slashing combined with a Dynasty Warriors character design aesthetic set in a western medieval fantasy setting. This one is made by Koreans, so it has all the booby gooner character designs you'd expect from Korea. How did @basic turn out to be so gay when he hails from a country that makes games like this?)

Finished up Uncharted 2 a while ago and am about halfway through 3. It’s more polished than 2 but doesn’t feel a substantial step up overall.

Also got Control again, this time with the DLC. Looking forward to that. Definitely one of my favorite games from the last generation and I didn’t get to play the DLC on my previous play.

Knights of the Round (arcade) - yeah, thanks to you goobs in the movie thread talking about Dragonslayer and Excalibur I've been playing this for the past week. I have very fond memories of playing this at the movie theater as a kid, despite never getting past level 2 or 3 because the movie was about to start. The things I liked about it as a kid - the character design, setting and graphics - still hold up with me as an adult and capture the imagination.

It's a beat 'em up that bears more similarity to Golden Axe than Final Fight - smaller sprites, ability to ride horses, and slashing with swords in a medieval setting. I originally thought some of the bosses were also based on Arthurian legend, like the final boss Garibaldi, but apparently all of them were original characters by Capcom. Speaking of bosses, the first level boss, Scorn, who later becomes a common enemy, really spoiled me. His design, laughing taunt, and trouble getting up when knocked down easily makes him the most interesting boss in the game, imo. The other bosses were fine, but none of them had as much character as Scorn. Come to think, Garibaldi himself was a sprite swap of an earlier boss, the Silver King.

The game is also well-remembered for its leveling up system, where Lancelot, Arthur and Percival get upgrades to armor as they level up (Percival going bald and growing a beard being the biggest change). As well as this being my first time playing through the game with all three characters to get the maxed out level of 16, it might also be my first time playing to consciously recognize that the level up system is also purely cosmetic - certainly you feel stronger as you get more armor, but your attacks do just as much damage in the latter levels as they did in the first level. After realizing that, it felt like a gimmick but did add to the replay value of the game so whatever.

All in all, still a great arcade game - maybe my only complaint would be the game shot its load creatively with the first level boss as the others couldn't match it, aside from the Iron Golem boss. Still fun to play through. Getting a special ending for reaching the max level - which is only possible playing by yourself, and doing things like cutting the treasure chests to get more points and killing the same type of enemies in a row for score multiplier - also would have been appreciated it. Nice ending credits music.

Careful Arthur, that armor won't protect you...

@LoneSage If you liked KOTR check out Warriors of Fate (Tenchi Wo Karou 2) it’s very similar gameplay wise but set in China, part of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms story.

Lies of P Overture - played through the DLC, very well done. Loved the new weapons and makes the game feel that much more empowering. Finishing the NG+2 run to platinum the game and move on.

Switch
Unicorn Overlord - finished liberating both the volcano and elf regions, now on to the North.

Overtop.

2d Outrun 2 and Thrash Rally had a baby. But if you are in this thread, you already knew that.

Gameboy Wizardry Gaiden: Suffering of the Queen (English Rom Hack): almost to the last level of the dungeon. Really impressed with how well this plays for it being a 1991 Gameboy game. Really addicted to it - tons of enemy variation and a lot crammed into the game.

PC Virtua Fighter 5 REVO: Seattle has weekly tournaments now on Tuesday nights at the Salon. Very fun game.

PC Wizardry: The Five Ordeals: Can't stop playing this game.

Loving the Wizardry attention. The Japanese really took this series in some fantastic directions. I have The Five Ordeals but have yet to play it. I'm REALLY into Variants Daphne, though. If you like the series, I think you'll like this entry too. And it's free to play on Steam.

I played a bit of Daphne on mg phone and it seems alight. Definitely check out Five Ordeals - I like it best.

I’ll reinstall Daphne and check it out!

Daphne is one of those games that has thresholds. Like most gachas, there is a wall that you struggle to get past but once you do, you just want to keep playing and push it harder to see what comes next. Very similar accomplishment vibe to Dark Souls on a smaller scale..

The one trap, of course, is the temptation to spend money to get the cool characters. You CAN pull them with the resources the game gives you, but the event timer can create some FOMO anxiety if it gets its hooks in you. Pretty much a gacha axiom, free resources are sparingly dished out. But overall, it's still a great iteration of the series.

MVS/AES

World Heroes 2 Jet
Matrimelee

Got a Furrtek converter and I just tried it out for the first time tonight. Works great so far. I tried the home version of WH2J first to make sure my console was still working (I haven't fired it up in years), then the MVS version of the same game, then Matrimelee. All good, though I'm not currently getting sound out of AV port. Could well be that it just needs cleaning. Project for tomorrow.

The goal is to see, after everything is working correctly for regular games, if my NeoSD will work with it. Fingers crossed.

Shout-out to @Neo Alec for pointing out that they were back in stock last month. So far it's been great.
