Tragic death of the man himself, but he leaves behind a great game that I have been playing whenever I can over the last couple of weeks. Just about to win my first season. Took a lot of effort, but very rewarding.

Play this from time to time, but don't have the urge to invest serious time and money into it. Doesn't seem to get that much play in my local arcade of late either. Still, probably my favourite KOF since 2000.

How well does it play? I looked at the booklet and choked at the Mortal Kombat looking controlls. So I never picked it up.

How well does it play? I looked at the booklet and choked at the Mortal Kombat looking controlls. So I never picked it up.

It's pretty awful, the supers are the same for everyone. F+Square is a projectile attack and DD+Square is the super move. Incredibly simplistic, what's worse is that the 'story' is shit as well. I think there's just three minigames added in as well; breaking a boulder, slicing the Saimyoshou and beating up Jagen's staff.
The only unique thing about the game is that for the domestic release the Japanese voices stayed the same, hell they didn't even change the logo on the Start sceen from Japanese. Except for English subtitles and the English words above the Japanese in the Menu screen, you'd think it wasn't an NTSC-U game.
And judging from the anime intro cinema, I'd estimate that this game was released only a few months before the place in the series where it is now.

Overall an amazingly mundane fighter in which case the only reason people play the game is for the license. Glad I only got mine for $9 last February from jhendrix But it is a 2D, sprite-based fighter, and yeah, if you see it for like $10-$15 complete I'd say go for it -- if only to satisfy your curiosity.
