On New years eve I had:

4-5 coronas
hand sized bottle of Jager (dunno how much is in it, probably about 4 shots worth)
about 1 shot, maybe a little more of Jack (killed the last of my friends bottle whilst he wasn't looking :tickled: )
a 32 oz. Natty Ice to wash it down

It was the first time that I blacked out from alcohol. And when I mean blacked out, I mean I was awake and talking and doing stuff (more drinking, as I found out from pictures), but I can't remember any of it. Not fun.

That 32 of Natty Ice was a friends, and I don't even remember drinking it.

Its the absinth. That stuff goes straight to my head. I always get a headache from that even after 1 shot.

Yuck.

We have to catch up next time I'm in Manchester, but I've not been overnight since we last met, soon though!

We made up some special cocktails based on Bond films two...you only live twice was a half pint of absinth and a half pint of bleach...

I skipped over that.

Stuff's nasty. I imported some err a friend imported some, and its not all its cracked up to be.

Even WITH the flame, sugar carmelizing, etc..

I guess its cool to try 1x but a whole bottle is kinda a waste.

I bought New Belgium's seasonal brew 2 Below. It's crisp and robust, but it has a bit of a bitter aftertaste. Overall it wasn't bad.

As for hard liquor my roommate bought a bottle of Whaler's Banana Rum. It's Hawaiian rum that has a 24% alcoholic content (compared to Parrot Bay's 20%) and it's pretty smooth. I had a sample before I went to bed today, and it's really good. It doesn't even have that nasty fake banana aftertaste. :tickled:

That´s because the commercial absinthe contains little to no wormwood.

You need the real stuff from underground distillers from e.g The Czech republic.

During the holiday season, I concentrated on:

Liquors/Schnaps/Brandy:

- Alter Gerhard Cognac - A fruity and quite soft oak-barrel-built Cognac from Rhineland/Germany, very nice to go with medium-bodied cigars.

- Absolut Vodka - Well, I'm not exactly a fan of this Swedish vodka due to its overly creamy aftertaste but since some of my friends like it a lot, we always have a bottle or two of it on our parties.

- Slivovic - We had two bottles of Slivovic made by the (Romanian) father of a friend of my wife, it was the best stuff of that kind I ever drank. Normally I'm not really into Slivo because most of them give me sodburn and headaches but not this one, it's silky smooth with elegant aromes and tastes, soft, fragrant, almost like a good Grappa. I'm a believer now! :)

- Laphroaig 10 yrs old (single malt) - I don't know a lot of people who like this single but I'm a fan ever since I tried it when I was in England a few years ago. It tastes after iodine, peat, salt, gray clouds, wild water, has a certain round sweetness and lots and lots of body... difficult to describe but worth a try IMO. I always keep a bottle of it in my cellar which normally lasts a full year, Laphroaig definitely is no single for everyday use. Oh, and if you want to give it a try, see if you can find the 15 years old version which isn't as phenolic as the 10 years old variant.

Beer:

- Wolfshöher Vollmondbier (brewed on full moon) - Fresh, tasty, bubbly, one of my fave beers.

- Flensburger Pilsener (no new years eve without at least a crate of it)

Absinthe with or without the wormwood is actually pretty good if you like black licorice. I do.

I can also drink the green Chartreuse. Time to take your medicine...No really, it's complex, delicious and tastes of medieval mountain herbs.

I got some Glenmorangie and Grey Goose for XMAS. Somebody also gave me a whole box of Trader's booze to restock my bar.

Alcoholism is a disease, but it's a great fuckin' disease.

Lots of booze over the holidays as usual.

Some bottles of a nice Chianti I can't remember now.
Plenty of champagne.
A few cases of lager.

And I've been nipping away at a lovely 1990 Bowmore Vintage sherry cask malt, and a little 17yo Auchentoshan I've had in the cupboard .

@BlackSpy - is that particular Ardbeg the "Uigeadail" bottling? I've been considering picking up a bottle of that, as it seems within price range (£40/$75 or so). How does it compare to the typical 10yo Ardbeg?

I desparately want to try that Ardbeg Single Cask Christmas 06 bottling they've done from 1975, sounds heavenly, but sadly well more expensive than I can afford!

Yeah, it's the Uigeadail. I do like it and it's not really that pricey but I'm not sure it offers much more than the 10 year old. The 75 is great, a friend of mine picked up a couple of bottles and I'm prone to having a nip when visiting him. Don't have one of my own though :(
