Plus, he's a psychotic, little ultra-right wing moral absolutist -- Ditko's love letter to Ayn Rand, the Question, cranked up to 15. You're not supposed to look up to him. There's a reason he sent his journal to the New Frontiersman... because that's the paper Rorschach reads and takes seriously. He's also a very scared, little man under the mask. Terrified of women and sex. More than once in the book, he refers to anyone who has sex as a whore, and he ranks "fornicators" right up there with murderers.

I agree it's hard not to like the character, but if you can relate to him, please get help.

Ths movie doesn't work. I enjoyed it in the main but won't be watching it again (maybe on TV). Its too long, they shoehorned too much in, pacing is screwed with large segments of character biopsy and some others just passing you by. Few ropey CG moments, too much big blue penis.....granted the bird playing silk spector is smokingly smoke, the sex scene is a bit long to the point it's soft core. Worth a watch, some decent action, but it's not right, 3/5 skulls.

Spotting Robert Palmer was maybe the best bit

Finally Read it. I was very underwhelmed. It just didn't seem that great, maybe during its time, but I really feel the plot itself is just kind of goofy, and the giant vagina tentacle monster just looks goofy. Also, wouldn't you figure the US would blame the soviets for it?

you guys are all nuts, this movie was the most ridiculous piece of shit i have ever had the misfortune to watch.

if it wasent so extremely graphic at times it might have been passeable as something concieved by/for deranged children under 10.. but now not even that.. i cant even find words to describe how insaneley bad this movie is and to be honest id rather not go into detail about it as id like to forget it as soon as possible.

If you somehow didn't like it, that's one thing, but don't sit here and tell me it isn't a incredible work of fiction. If you don't understand why Watchmen is so damn good, you seriously need to give your head a shake there buddy (and if you went to college, I'd consider asking for your money back while you're at it).

All I'm saying is I didn't think it was anything that great. I'm not saying it really isn't, but me personally just found it kind of silly. Everything about it was real good such as the characters the aesthetics, and the overall feel was just great, but the plot just felt so meh to me. Couple that with Veidt being (to me anyway) completely ridiculous in all regards and I found myself wanting to finish it, but never that excited to see what happened next.

How can the 'overall feel' be great and the characters be great but the plot is 'meh'.

Does not compute.

Looks like the word is out about how lame the movie was for people unfamiliar with the book --it had a major nosedive in attendance in week 2.

I feel that they did a great job creating the characters, their personalities, and sticking to them, but I felt the overall story they were thrown into wasn't that great.

Dunno if that makes sense, but it does to me.

I don't know if the movie was dumbed down or just handled clumsily at some points.

I hate to nitpick but,

The movie goes like this:

Comedian: AUGH you slashed my fucking face! *cocks gun*
Manhattan: NAO Don't do it man! she's carrying your baby, dued.

-BLAM-

Comedian: You could've stopped me but you didn't etc. You're losing it, man.
Manhattan: LOL

In the comic an oblivious Dr. Manhattan says he never stopped the Comedian because to him it's already happened. He later states that everything in the universe is a puppet to a preordained fate including himself...only difference is he can "see the strings" that are pulling everything along...

^was this a little too "heavy" for North American audiences to wrap their pointy heads around or what?

"Men are arrested, dogs get put down"

^That was a nice, catchy line, with quick gratification, but it comes at the cost of some awesome dialogue between Roschach and the shrink....something about standing at the precipice of darkness, Where Walter Kovacs shuts his eyes and turns away from it, but it was "Rorschach" who opened them up, grabbed the meat cleaver and fucked those two dogs up before burning the pedo alive.

Cuffing him to a pipe and giving him a hacksaw to free himself was way more badassed too IMO.

Oh and that long assed sex scene on the "archie" felt like a 20 minute Cialis commercial.

So yeah, those are my biggest gripes. I like the actors, cinematography, etc. just hate the fact that they butchered the source material into something a little more palatable for bloodthirsty morons and doofuses who have never even read the comic. =S

Saw it Sunday, really enjoyed it. I don't understand people gripes with the violence in it (did anyone see 300?), and I didn't think the sex scene was that long. Cheesy yes, long? Not really. Also if I hadn't read the limitless comments on Dr. Manhatten's cockles I probably wouldn't have even really noticed it. Reading online you'd think he was walking around with a giant hard on the whole time.

I don't have a big gripe with it other than I can see where the "movie going public" won't get it. The middle of the movie feels disconnected from the beginning and end (basically had to stop and think, ok why is all this going on again?) but in the end everything got tied together. Oh, and I didn't really care for how they made every kick and punch from the "heroes" seem like it was a sledge hammer coming down. They are normal people afterall.

I also thought the ending worked very well. Pleasently surprised and can't wait for it on Blu-ray.

I think that would have made for a nice addition to the story, maybe, change things around a bit- instead of The Comedian practicing wanton violence, Dr. Manhattan runs that pregnant Vietnamese chick through with his magical extendo-dong, BAM!, right in the forehead. Comedian looks shocked at first, then laughs in slo-mo, no sound to it, just more Dylan, and drinks his drink.

Maybe that's in the Director's Cut.

You state this as fact when plenty of people say they liked it without having read the comic, myself included. How can you possibly say how good the movie is for someone who hasn't read the comic? You're coming at it from an entirely different perspective.

Angry nerds do more harm to comic book adaptations than any director whose vision falls short of their nerd audience's impossible dream.

Anyone who couldn't follow the story without having read the comic first should hop back on the short bus and stay the fuck out of the theater.

Well what can I say... Read it again some time. If you still don't understand why it's so respected, I really don't know what to say to you.

Some things are universally lauded for a reason. Watchmen really is the Citizen Kane of comics.

No one says you have to like it, but if you don't respect it, then I guess it's just plain over your head.

I can see why its respected, but I just don't really care for it as a whole.

We disagree on a lot of different issues, but here...

I totally agree. Watchmen deserves the respect and recognition it gets. I read the whole thing in about 6 hours, but I thoroughly enjoyed it not only for the story but the symbolism as well.

I'm not sure whether I like it more than Citizen Kane, however...

You liked it, that's great. So did a few others on here. Lovely. people I talked to? They gave it a hearty 'Meh +' and wished they'd read the book in order to get it better. Don't even begin on the reviewers, which were mostly mediocre to bad.

I enjoyed watching it, but the movie, as a movie, was average for the reasons I outlined earlier.

Wall E trailer mashed with Watchmen:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-Ka8DnUVEQ

Cute, and very well done... though all it is is Wall-E set to The Beginning is the End is the Beginning. Great job finding shots that match the stuff from the original Watchman trailer (which I watched a few dozen times after reading the graphic novel last Fall).

Fun Fact: the song was actually written by Smashing Pumpkins for the Batman & Robin soundtrack (yikes!) --thankfully it got attached to a much better movie than that.

I'm still waiting to see this as I've been a bit ill and tired to go out on a weekday. However, one thing that has irked me since this was announced is the fact that DC actually decided to whore this out to the big screen. No matter how you put it, it is impossible to squeeze this into anything less than 6 hours (30 mins per episode). Ideally, this would have rocked big time had somebody commissioned a 12 hour mini-series on HBO or Sho.

Sincerely,

Mikhail

The story is too large for a feature film granted, but have you read Watchmen lately? The plot is choppy as hell with backstory and character development, and it's better for it.
