Greetings,

Here are the options for April SotM. I'm trying to get away from mainstream titles ---- and titles that feature heavy scoring.

Here are the options for April:

Dangun Feveron (Fever SOS): This game features more than enough variety. In addition to an expertly done disco theme - gameplay is tailored to each individual player. You pick your ship speed, you pick your weapons. Scoring is a capture and build system.

DoDonPachi II: Bee Storm: As most know, this is not in fact a CAVE shooter. It was developed on the PGM / IGS hardware and published by Capcom. Gameplay is similar with chaining and bee collection - but the sprites are quite different than CAVE - things are just...bigger.

Captain Tomaday: This Neo Geo title is oft overlooked - perhaps due to its "cutesy" appearances. Don't let that fool you - this game is tough and features an options system similar to the Twinbee and Parodius series...which lends itself to many scoring intracacies.

Going to have to go disco even though I probably won't get a score high enough to post. :-/

I like Dangun quite a bit, I even have a pcb for it, however it's not a very good pick for a monthly challenge.

Dangun does not display your full score as you play the game; only the score for that stage is visible as the stage is being played. Not a deal breaker in itself, however the minimum score to get on the high score list is higher than most people here will be able to obtain. And if you don't make it on the high score list, all you get is GAME OVER with no final score shown. So basically, most people will never get an opportunity to even see their total score.

Sure, there are some hacks out there that mess with save states in mame to zero out the high score list, but that isn't going to help pcb players.

So Bee Storm it is!

Don't use mame for pgm. Ever :P

Final Burn Alpha runs it 99% flawlessly.

I don't have a mame setup or any of these games, do you guys mostly use emulation to continually participate in SOTM? Hmm I'll have to get on top of that...

I try to play the PCB or console port where applicable. I chose these as they are on hand, but it would be nice to do the voting all in November and announcing the entire calendar in advance so folks have the time to source the board, port, or get emulation sorted out.

Poll runs through tomorrow and then we start on Tuesday.

Very rarely will I emulate...As mj said, the PCB or port is where I tend to go for these monthlies. About the only time emulation comes up (for me) is if it is a title that is just not possible for me to play on og hardware (don't own the system), or I am on the go somewhere and practicing on my psp (if applicable). That being said, emulation IS allowed in nearly all of these, so don't be discouraged from participating if you don't have the hardware!

This. Oh my dear lord yes, this so much!
