Virtual On US won't work in my DC...displays Japanese characters. WTF?

I bought a used copy of Virtual On at Software, Etc. a while back and let it sit on my shelf for a couple months, so it's way beyond the return period. When I insert the disc, it spins a bit, and then a black screen with Japanese characters appears. Then nothing. No giant robots, no shit blowing up, nothing.

Anyone have any clue what's wrong?

Are you using that MIJ dreamcast?
Sounds like you need to clean the dics with disc doctor. Or is that a JPN game.

Huh, thats really weird. The only time I've ever seen something like this is when my MS PSX didn't work for that 1 time.

It's made in Japan, but it's a US unit. Just for shits and giggles, I think I'll try a boot disc and see what happens.
