I played the game on my friend's ps3, and quite frankly, i hate the load times. They were instant in the arcade version but are lenghty for the PS3. The game is also not much different from VF4 evo as far as moves are concerned. It has the same feel with a few tweaks here and there. Even the announcer and the sound effects are the same. The graphics are rougher and pixelated when compared to the arcade version's lush graphics. The water effects in the beach stage in particular was toned from the arcade version. They look flatter and wave animations are weaker when compared to the arcade version. The sparkling ripples of the waves are also less stellar. The port is definately not a perfect port.

1080p looks very weird with some corners cut off. I don't think it's native, probably upscaled. 720p is definately better from what I see. Hopefully the X360 version will be better with online play and based on version C. They better improve the load times and the graphics for the 360 version. I have confidence since the 360 port will be handled by AM 2 themselves unlike the PS3 port.

If not, where the HELL are you seeing VF5 machines in the US or otherwise? And you can forget online support. It just won't happen. So stop it. Finally, version C? Version C, as of me typing this, doesn't even EXIST yet.

Did you deselect the 720p in custom settings of the dashboard video output? If I have 480p 720p and 1080i selected, every time I play VF5 it defaults to720p. Just take out the 720p in custom settings and VF5 will display in 1080i.

I will give that a go. How does 720p and 1080i compare?

I loaded mine to HDD right from the start so never new it would output in 1080i...

As for the game itself, I love it. Everything is so polished.

Spending most of my time in Quest Mode, and now that my rank is quite decent, the competition is getting pretty tough. Some really tight fights. It gets really intense when both players are defending well and you have to figure out ways of breaking their defense.

Only minor complaint about the game is in exhibition match mode. At first I though the commentary was done really well, and it is to an extent, but if you watch about 3 or 4 matches you start to hear them repeating the same stuff, and it gets annoying quickly. Just watching the matches themselves is cool though

Maybe i've been playing too much but right now my rank is Warrior. I've come to the conclusion that this game is MUCH easier than Evo. On Evo I couldn't get past 8th Dan on my best day. I actually got my first loss today from Lau who was some weird rank i'd never heard of. I want to play more but i'm exhausted.

I haven't gotten any decent items yet but I think the items that are received are based on what costume you're wearing. I've always used Jeff's default outfit but maybe it's time for a change...

@hanafuda: though I normally quite like 720p settings on most games, I'm really preferring 1080i for VF5. The character detail is a bit sharper, and the waxy look lessens a little, IMO.

I don't mind forgoing the ultra-smoothness of p over i, in this case.

I don't see how you can't have obtained any decent items yet though if you have put that much time into Quest Mode, as just by filling the plate with 7 orange globes (?) it unlocked Lau's C costume for me, plus by winning tournaments and such you get extra costume items.

Sony consoles are always getting lame ports of sega games. Sonic the hedgehog was also worse than the 360 version with more pop-ups and longer loads. I guess this is sega's way of telling sony, "screw you for fucking up the DC. We'll now make you look as bad as possible". But then again, ps3 does not have as much RAM as the arcade version's hardware. Sony also played the part of making themselves look bad.

So far I've filled up 2 plates and won every tourney i've entered, yes i've got the little glowing wristband thingy too. I'm going to try using some different costumes and see if I can get some better items...

Moving along from PS3-hater-madness, that worked like a charm, Chunkylover, big thanks.

And it reminded me of how damn gorgeous VF5 really is. Wow. Spent a little while just fucking around with different characters out of the Lion comfort zone, and I'm especially liking El Blaze. Very cool moveset befitting a lucha- great mix of strong throws and strikes from a distance and other weirder stuff, and a cool sense of "always moving" being his best approach to a fight. Kinetic little dude, very well implemented addition.

I got to play this thanks to Chunky Lover. I like the game alot but it didnt wow me that much. The BGs are pretty lame. Its a good thing the gameplay is very solid because overall its a pretty generic title. I love VF but this one seems like they didnt try that hard.

I will wait to buy it for my 360 when it comes out.

I'm still 3rd dan though! Last night I played for about 2 hours (1080i looks nice, thanks for the info guys) and despite building up a lot of wins I still didn't get enough to push me to the next level, although I did lose a few fights.

I'm currently about 95 wins and 11 losses. Most of the challengers are all higher levels than me. I'm finding 8/9/10 dan challengers quite tough: can scrape some fights but lose others.

Still loving it though. It is just a joy to play, even for a VF noob like me. I will be trying my luck in the arcade soon..

Went back to it earlier today and had a winning run of 14 or 15 matches, which was enough to promote me to 5th dan

I've only played 15 matches in Quest mode (15-0, of course), which I think has me at like 5th or 4th kyu.

I played the same mode in 4 quite a bit, and I remember how you had to have a massive win streak to go up in rank, and one loss would kill you. My record was something like 175-12, but I think I was only 4th or 5th Dan. I still remember the time that I played and beat the CPU 10th Dan Akira. Sweet just watching it play, let alone winning.
