Ive been using Flash MX 2004 at school lately to vectorize stuff quickly so I can blow them up and edit them easily. I dont have Flash MX (and its too big to download right now).

Is there an illustrator (or photoshop) plugin or a free program that does a good job of vectorizing images?

At the risk of being an asshole. Vectorizing programs suck.

There are tons of tutorials out there on learning how to draw with bezier curves, in any program you choose (Illustrator, Freehand, Sodi Podi, GiMP, etc.).

A lot of people tell me "Well I just don't care enough to learn". If you care enough to do something, such as this...for fun, then you probably should care enough to do it right.

Know what I'm saying?

You wouldn't make a SuperGun and put it in an old pizza box.

I know what you mean. I really only wanted this for text and simple logos and stuff that would take forever to do by hand, but could be done just as good in a tracing program.

Here's a trick I use for really simple stuff (only 1 color, mostly outlines and logos):

1) Load pic up in Photoshop (I have 5.5)
2) Select the item w/lmagic wand, etc.
3) Convert selection to work path
4) Deselct all
5) Activate path
6) Use arrow tool to select all points
7) Copy and paste into Illustrator

This let me do the MVS and Neo-Geo logos really quickly for my Control Panel.
The higher resolution the original image, the better it will turn out.

Currently in the MiniMVS of Doom: King of Fighters '98

If you really wanted to do it in Photoshop like that, you'd be better off using the magnetic pen tool.

The whole converting from selection to path is sketchy at best.

The magnetic pen tool, provided you have a clear deliniation between foreground and background, does a fairly good job of staying close to the shape.

Just draw along the edge of your shape, as close as you can, and it will snap to it.

In your option pallete you have your 'frequency' which you can dial up and it will increase the number of points you use (good if you have a lot of sharp corners).

But too many points isn't good either as the shape tends to be less smooth (the fewer points you use in a shape, the smoother it is. There in lies the difficulty of mastering the pen tool. Not only to be able to draw anything with it, but draw it in as few points as possible.).
