When exactly did we change the lingo where an illegal immigrant became an undocumented immigrant ?

Around the time it became politically incorrect to call them anything but poor, hard working not-yet-citizens.

But is tying it to no commodity better?

Actually, yes, it is. Because if vast gold deposits are found in say, Russia, then your currency quickly devalues because of the devalued gold market because the price of gold drops.

Now, tying your currency to the value of your economy makes sense. When your industry puts out products and your country dominates the market, your currency will dominate foreign markets thus raising it's value.

Not only that, but you've then got the problem of how to value your currency against others, especially those that don't meter their currency in rocks?

Just tell me one time when an immense amount of gold has been found in the last say 10,000 years.

As long as we force everybody to Buy Oil in USD, we have a semi-hard standard.

First, you can't "force" people to buy oil in USD. Second, the Euro is now being used to price crude exchanges in some markets.

Third, the USD is not "backed" by X many barrels of oil. If the currency tanks, it just takes more imaginary dollars to buy one real barrel of oil.

Weevus said:
Not to sound like a dumbass, but what does this mean to the average US consumer who just buys things in the US?

Yeah, you sound like a dumbass. As previously mentioned, if your dollar goes to shit, you need more of it to trade with people who don't use your dollar. When it really goes to pot, you have to coopt someone else's currency to do business.

Its such a fundamental point, I'm saddened most people can't grasp it. I can hardly wait for CNN exposes on Wal-Mart's future "shocking" price increases.

Illegal Mexicans? Don't you mean undocumented immigrants?

It's almost like as if you're blaming the Mexicans for the reason why this country is coming to its knees.

That is all I have to contribute to this thread.

No you stupid fucker, I mean Mexicans…

We do not have a problem with illegal Chinese, or Germans, or Africans or Russians…

We are being overrun by fucking illegal MEXICANS.

I can’t recall seeing Chinese standing outside Home Depot’s or looking of day work…I don’t recall seeing that the California school system was taken to bankruptcy by a flood of illegal Australians either.

MEXICANS…

Let me say it again for your dumb ass…

I-L-L-E-G-A-L M-E-X-I-C-A-N-S

Quit being so politically correct and call a spade a spade…

Illegal Mexicans are weighing down our public aid systems, public schools, hospitals and other free services while giving nothing back in taxes thus brining the economy down...flat fact.

Illegal Chinese are too smart to be seen by you, they huddle in restaurant kitchens peeling spuds and washing dishes.

By smart I mean fear deportation.

Quit being such a know-it-all.

Not sure how serious you are being bok. Semi if I am judging it correctly. In Toronto, I literally know people who set up fake marriages to stay in the country. Great people and totally westernized. But there is a huge community of illegals and it literally thrives.

smokehouse's allergy demanded a facetious reply.

There are 'illegals' of many nationalities in this country, but the Mexicans are singled out for political convenience because they reached the critical mass to become more visible than the native population would like. NYC has tons of undocumented.

Illegal workers do pay income taxes. It is taken out of their paychecks by the employer. Just because you fill out a W9 with a fake social security number doesn't mean they don't take the money.

Are you fucking kidding me?

Come to Chicago my friend; see what there are the most of when it comes to “illegals”. I’m not saying there aren’t illegal immigrants of all kinds living in the US, I’m saying the ones flooding the border to the south are largest problem for the time being.

Illegal Mexicans are everywhere here and they are growing in numbers….this isn’t an opinion, this is a fact.

I’m so fucking sick of this political correct approach to an epidemic. We have millions of illegal “people” that happen to be from fucking Mexico coming here in a flood. Call it what you will, it’s still a HUGE problem. Any time anyone says something negative about illegal Mexicans they’re branded as some sort of racist or anti-Mexican person.

I have nothing against Mexican people, hell, a majority of my wife’s family are Mexican….but their legal citizens…I despise illegal immigrants that are ruining the country that I love…currently that falls on illegal Mexicans.

Apparently you’ve never worked on a job site with illegal immigrants before.

Last winter I worked on a Wal Mart distribution center…the general contractor was Walton (no relation). Theyh had a mostly illegal force of workers that couldn’t speak a lick of English. They mostly did laborer work. They came up on buses with Texas license plates (go figure) and slept in large trailers.

Once a month a trailer on the edge of the job site opened up, they lined up and were paid cash…yes, CASH. No stolen SS, no taxes. As for us, every worker that was not illegal had to sign a non-disclosure form just to work on site. As a matter of fact, a similar Wal Mart center in Virginia was busted by INS at the same time for the same reason…

Do you really thing that migrant workers making $1.50/hr are being documented by their employer?

Come on…

Smokehouse may be being a bit brash for some of you, but he's not speaking complete untruths.

I live in Houston, and there are thousands upon thousands of illegal immigrants here, majority Mexican.

I don't have a problem with immigration, and in fact, I love Mexican people and Mexican culture quite a bit since I was raised here in Houston, but I do think that illegal immigration across the Mexico/US border is a problem.

I have zero problems with Mexican immigration, but I do believe that it should be regulated so that they are made tax-paying citizens of this country.

If you believe that they all pay their taxes through fake SS numbers and the like, you're only fooling yourself. I can go pay day-laborers to work on any job I choose at any time I like, and guess what, they only take cash.

I can take pictures of some street corners around my area if you think this is bullshit.

Again, immigration is not a problem, but illegal immigration is.

I'm hardly a conservative, and I'm a pretty level headed person, but I definitly see a problem with the huge influx of illegals over the border down here in Texas.

People need to stop being so politically affiliated with their thoughts here, and maybe start seeing that there are middle-grounds that can be found.

Illegal immigration is definitly a bit out of control, and the inevitable consequence of that is some sort of economic burden on the country. Hard to say how much of a burden that is, but certainly it has some affect on all of us..

Back to the currency issue: how long do we have before an economic disaster hits?

Should I start becoming familiar with how to get my hands on cheap land in Baja?

The Irs currently has somthing like nine trillion ($9,000,000,000,000) from people who have non matching SS#'s and names. Most of its believed to be from illegal imigrants.

Edit ok I did some research and its not as high as nine trillion but since 85' it is in almost hundereds of billions. I thought I found that number for a research paper guess not.

If your currency isn't anchored to anything like, say.....gold....then an economic disaster is just a phone call away.

The US is 60,000,000,000,000+ dollars in debt. Shit, just let China call in it's debt and the US would collapse in most markets.

Gold Rushes of the 19th century? I was thinking of some random, possible, that is unlikely but possible, event that could sink the Gold market.

The value of Gold isn't tied to ANYTHING either. In fact, the Government set the price of Gold directly during the entirey of the 20th century when we were on the gold standard. It's a number that's even more imaginary than up the value of the dollar is now.

The weak dollar has zero to do with illegal immigration(breaking stupid laws is still illegal), the gold standard, or anything else but Bush's failed fiscal policy.

This is a misunderstanding of the debt system. China calls in it's debt? They're in US Dollar T-Bills. We just simply inflate our currency, print out several trillion in dollars and give them back their money. Except it's going to be worth far less than what they gave us in the first place.

BTW, 60 trillion? That's not entirely China's. That's probably mostly Japan's debt, btw. Given that the first time we did this deficit spending dance was under Reagan and he borrowed from Japan. Not to mention that American and European banks also lend to the Government as well.

Huh. That number seems REALLY wrong.

60 trillion!? Last I checked it was only ~9.1ish. You're almost off by entire order of magnitude.
