Rigt now I am using Adobe 5.0 LE,it's the piece of software that came with my scanner. Anybody else using this program? if so, can you verify that it does'nt have the channels and paths menu options??
The option I am left with for background removal is quick masking which appears to be the best method with this program.
Any input would be appreciated here.

I am assembling a SamSho III for SB that I scanned in at 600 DPI wih a scale of approx 89% yielding me pixel dimensions pretty close to the SB template I created long ago. That template was mainly created by myself for what I and Garg felt was a nice fit.
Any input would be appreciated.

Ifyou notice on the back of that image I am taking on the tedious task of removing background with the aid of Quick Mask. I know that there are other methods like the Extract Feature and Alpha Channels but I am pretty sure this Photoshop 5.0 LE does'nt support them.
This is like the template and insert image I decided to do all at once as well as try to develop an efficient way of banging these out at somewhat of a rapid pace so I will prolly use a more complete version of Photoshop with the channels and extract features.

I'd say the magic wand tool but the text is different shades. Perhaps you could try upping the contrast using the levels tool on the text, then when it's a higher contrast and there doesn't seem to be an "edge" around the letters try the magic wand tool. That won't preserve correct shading though (then again the text at the bottom is probably supposed to look white w/o shading, but the lettering at the top of the back won't look the same, color-wise). The fact that the text is so skinny and small makes this difficult. I'm by no means an expert, maybe Blaine (where is he? He had some PS turorials IIRC) could help you.

You also use PS5 LE? Talk about LIMITED edition, eh? :( Well, free is free (well it was free with my brother's drawing tablet). It'd be better if you could undo more than one time :O.

Still it's functional, I made this insert in 5 LE: http://hometown.aol.com/jawaguy500/insert.html It was fun making that insert but a bit tedious, dunno if I'd ever make another. And to add insult to injury, PBC's SNES site went down about the time I finished the insert (which I was gonna submit it to).

Looking back, the insert isn't as good as I remember. There's a lot of white around the logo, the cover is a bit pixellated, some of the logos are too pixelly....

Yeah this is kinda spam but :P. Know of any good freeware progs out there that are really powerful like a normal photoshop?

Thanks for confirming that 5.0 LE "is what it is", a pack in software:D
After the scan I basically want to preserve the color rich look so I have left the adjustment controls alone although i thought about it using the VARIOUS feature.
The magic wand is a nice lil' tool but robs the text of it's shadows somewhat as you stated. i'm thinking that alpha channeling woukd work real nice with the text (I THINK) so I will be using a full version of photoshop next go around.
Another thing I could do is just match the up the size and style format of the FONT for used for insert images and RE-TYPE the text and and line it up with original and MERGE DOWN seeing as I will be neding black text with the white background,
just experimenting now....
Your SNES insert looks good ,the logo border appears to be abit jagged but other than that, looks good.

Okay, I just inverted the text sense it need to be black.
This 5.0 LE has no text options :D. Going to dump this really FAST after this is done... That white background needs to be cleaned up and I have to get rid of all the dark edges in the Neo Geo logo to the right or replace it with one that has the dimensions I need.
The process is not very bad using this pack in version of photoshop at all if you're using a ready made template.

I am done with this one. Who's accepting UL's?? This insert is a lil' over 3 megs in PDF format. Not having the History Log in this special version of Photoshop is annoying to state the least as was mentioned previously. The INVERT command and ADJUST->LEVELS feature came in handy for text.
Going to keep the assembled works conservative for now until I grow the library for public use.

Well with the down time of the ISP,I realized that I had gotten my dimensions wrong with Samurai Shodown III and I wanted to get a format downpact for inserts that have a colorful insert for the back cover so I chose the KOF 97 insert to make my template. I have no time or the resources to get creative right now so I will be releasing the original look inserts with minor edits.
I scanned the insert in a 600 dpi,I then adjust the print size to 300 dpi cutting the image in half and knocking down the BYTE size considerably for DL transfers. This is the 1st of three files hat will fit on an ordinary 1.44 sense I did'nt feel like running my zip drive back and forth from CPU to CPU for lack of NOT having the CD burner I was supposed to get mad: and my IP won't allow huge files at the moment.
I need somebody to print this out and tell me how it looks.
thanks.
The JPG is going to make it appear as if the the insert has black borders but they are dark gray.
I forgot to mention that the insert is about 3.7 megs
I also forgot to mention that I UL'ed Decepticon all three RAR files :)
