Just wanted to know if there were any other RPG enthusiasts on the boards. My gaming preferences go from 2D fighters to Platformers, and RPGs in general. Recently I picked up the latest in the SaGa installment from SquareEnix called Unlimited SaGa for the PS2. I had previously played this game over the summer as a rental and got completely fed up with the entire game. I decided it was complete crap and vowed to never waste my time on a game from the SaGa series again. Needless to say, I had already made that vow after playing SaGa Frontier 1 and 2 on the Playstation. For some reason, the series continues to peak my curiosity as its mechanics, characters, and story break away from the molds of the norm and mainstream. On Friday I was browsing the electronics department at Wal-Mart and noticed the game on sale for the advertised price of $20. I picked up the game and took it home for its second test drive and was pleasantly surprised to find that I had missed the point completely. After replaying through several parts of the game I finally began to get the hang of it and am currently on the final stage of Judy's quest. I don't know how many other people play next gen systems and/or RPGs on the boards, but has anyone else played Unlimited SaGa. Secondly, how much to you like or probably hate this game?

I actually bought this game to try it out and it's fairly good BUT the word "unlimited" is VERY misleading as it is VERY limited. If you're thinking that you can go around and do a bunch of leveling think again... theres no powerleveling of ANY kind. It seems like the creators wanted to make sure you didn't get too powerful or even give you a chance to try some techniques or experimentation except in real battles. The game is VERY linear meaning you're told where to go and what to do and you aren't allowed to leave town until you've chosen your next quest. You can do some side quests but that's it.

As the game says, it's only for the 'hardcore' but I like a little bit of exploration in my RPGs and this one just doesn't have much. However, I CAN see why there is a small following on this game as it is an interesting diversion and provided you don't like a bunch of choice then this game is great. I sold mine since I only picked it up while I was waiting for VF4Evo but when it hits the bargain bin, I may pick it up again...

This game is a stinker but you know back in the NES and SNES days it wouldn't have been released because Square never really brough over the LESS popular games that were too Japanese... but now Square's bringing over pretty much everything, and 9/10 what they do bring is good but the point is this game sucks.

I love consoole RPGs. They were by "bread and butter" for years (until this past year, when I developed ADD for RPGs and anything more in depth than fighters). I played the original SaGa game and... I fucking HATED it. It was one of 3 games I ever took advantage of EB's lenient return policy and I don't regret it at all. That game was easily one of the messiest loose turds ever expelled from Square's anus. I had played shareware PC RPGs that were better than it was (OK, maybe it wasn't THAT bad). This caused me to avoid the other 2 games as you would someone with leprosy.

I thought the 2nd game was GREAT. Multiple generations, intertwining stories... just so epic and so beautiful.

I played it with help, though (thanks Brady Publishing). These games are just SO complicated and the manuals that come with the games are never any help. It's no wonder nobody understands them - how could you?

With Unlimited though... Take everything it's got, remove those goddamned spinning "trap" wheels, and add some real maps and I bet I would've loved it. It was "break-your-controller" frustrating for me, though, and not knowing what exactly was going on didn't help. Shame...

It's very complicated. I'm about 25 hours into it with Armic and after a long while I finally understood it. Armic's quest is perhaps the hardest, it can't be finished without Quick Fix or certain other skills.

I found it boring and repetitive at times. I mean RPGs usually suffer from repetitive battles. But I got to the point where I was trying to avoid enemy encounters, you need to though in some dungeons as you only have a certain number of steps before you are taken back into town.
