Again technically correct, but if they were serious about taking on Game Boy, they obviously would have released a new platform into more stores, similar to Game Gear. This was a niche product meant to wring some more money out of their one actually successful platform in its end of life.
Alec: nomad vs gameboy sales and market share was not a competition

Fami: nomad was created during gameboy era and competing for market share in the portable/handheld gaming space

I'm sick of this talking past each other and I only got into this thread 15 minutes ago lol.

I'm not talking past him at all, he just doesn't have anything resembling a point.

Nomad was neat. Lynx was mind blowing when it came out. Game Gear was cool for what it was.

Nomad was definitely underplayed due to limited release, etc.

What is the big deal?

There is no deal, just half a dozen idiots took it super personally that I said it wasn't really portable for some reason.

It was definitely portable by comparison. We graded on a curve then. I couldn't take my Steam Deck anywhere because it was the size of an aircraft carrier.

i've caught fami in a double think. nomad is not portable, but a "portable" cdi w/o a screen is portable. he deserves to be thrown in the gulag.

Notice how I called it a dumbass model, and also notice how much like the Nomad all models of the CD-i faceplanted in sales

The Nomad is "a portable" but it's not portable, which is a big reason why it failed.

The CD-is were doomed regardless though, it didn't really matter whether it was portable or not if nobody wanted them to start with

Bring back the "Hamhelds" topic. Without the humor on this site words like "hamhelds" would never get invented. lol

goal post moving. dumbass portable model is still portable - it's just a subtype.

You're confusing two different usages of the word portable.

I never disputed that the Nomad was marketed as a portable. The fact that it was, but was in reality not very portable, was the first thing I pointed to when describing its failure. There is no goal post moving or inconsistency here at all, you just can't read.

Fami has tiny little girl hands. Confirmed.
The fuck are you even talking about? My hands are actually fairly big and the size of your hands has little to do with the portability of a game system unless you literally carry everything you take with you in your hands the entire time you're out and about. You don't literally hold your keys and your wallet and your phone in your hands all day when you leave the house, you put them in your pockets. Or, in your case, your purse.

To even use a Nomad you have to have the device itself (which isn't pocketable) plus a power source (battery pack or power adapter) and at least one full size Genesis cart. Nobody was ever gonna buy and use the device in significant numbers, and the number they did sell was considered a failure.

The post that got everyone's panties in a twist was me responding to Gutz calling the Nomad a portable.

You can't out-semantic me. Worthless, stupid knowledge is my wheelhouse.

You should get a point. You narrowed the criteria so that any gaming portable any company launched at the time is technically a Game Boy competitor. What's the point of that? No one can disagree. Nomad was obviously targeting a different segment of the portable market, based on price alone, to mention nothing else.

What segment of the market was that? The nonexistent one?

Retard.

Yeah it did turn out to be a pretty small segment. I can't imagine they thought it would be huge to begin with. You act like everyone at Sega pratically expected it to sell like hotcakes. lol

They didn't have confidence in it by the time it went to market (for reasons that are obvious to apparently everyone except you) but that doesn't mean they were targeting some nonexistent market segment you made up. Their plan was to sell as many of them as they could and that number turned out to be really small because it was a fucking stupid idea.

They didn't design, build, produce, and ship the device just to sell less than a million of them, primarily at severely reduced prices. It did less than 1/10th of what the Game Gear did and the Game Gear itself was not popular.

Saying they didn't want to sell a bunch of them anyway is the same bullshit copium Nintendo tried with the Virtual Boy. Just because they realized how fucked they were early on in the process doesn't mean they weren't trying from the outset.

Yeah, I suspect that's about all is.
I can solder but I'm not sure if I could do it well enough to fix it
If I knew someone I could relatively trust to do the caps & install an IPS who wouldn't rape me I might have it done.
I uh, got a Game Gear with an IPS screen, replaced caps, replaced battery, replaced face buttons, and replaced shell. It's a Franken Game Gear.

It's also incredibly cool, highly recommended. Pretty sure the seller does them as custom jobs IIRC.
