When I saw "beat 'em ups" I was ready to heartily recommend Guardian Heroes.

Also, even though it's totally unrelated, I won't miss any opportunity to point out that Konami beat 'em ups other than Vendetta are largely dog shit.

Glad I don't have to deal with that stuff yet. Also, I had listed my fighting games that I think you might like a while back, but there are some choice side scrolling beat 'em ups out there as well. Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon is actually really good. If you liked the show, it actually adheres to the first season pretty dead on.
