My friend is going in Australia for about one year (he will visit different cities and places), and he was wondering if there are some good videogames stores and Arcades.
Can somebody give me some tips so I can tell him?

Thanks in advance!

I know of 2 decent Arcades in Melbourne.
Timeout in Box Hill and another near China Town called White/Blue House, not sure on the exact name.

I can't remember the addresses cause I was exploring one day and found them.

In New South Wales that's pretty much it. You'll get the best competition there as they are the few arcades left.

All major arcades have been shut down in the last 10 years.

Queensland still has a few open. Try asking that question here:

Hmm. So it seems the downfall of arcades happened in Australia like it did in the US. What you guys need is a Jillian's or something. Which is sort of a big themed, adult (at night), bar and grill complete with full sports bars and arcades in them.

It's nearly all America has left. But before they sprung up, it was like an arcade ghosttown for many places. They almost all disappeared. Still, there are a couple in some states which get a lot of talk because they're like the last ones around; however they are far spread apart. It doesn't help kids get there, but if you're willing to go the distance.

The sad thing is, that the sports bars/arcade like Jillians seem to be picky about what games they put in. They are almost all sports-related or driving kind of games. Shooters and Fighting games are almost non-existant. However, more recently, you began to see more genres represented by the release of some of those Multi-cade cabinets. Like the ones Midway (Namco, I believe) and such released. You can select from some 50+ games to play in them.

For the very reasons you cite, I am surprised you recommended Jillians/Dave & Busters and the like. Gameworks is only marginally better.

But honestly, if I were in Australia for even a year, I would probably be too busy having fun and driving around (if I could get a car). Heck, I would go kangaroo hunting and shit...

I didn't go as far as to recommend it, but it's what you call, the only thing we got. It's what you expect when all else nearly goes away. I did mention the whole thing was sad, really. Gameworks is so far away from most of America, I don't even know a single one within 2000 miles of here. I guess it's a West Coast thing. And if I was in Australia, I'd probably hang around Queensland the whole time. Playing Digeridoos, surfing the Point, visiting Australia Zoo, trying to get a taste for Vegemite, and finding the best drinks.
