To this day, Neo-Geo.com remains to me, one of the most interesting, intelligent, and close knit communities I have ever been involved with.
The community has to do with the Neo-Geo as a filter, by filtering out casual gamers or even standard gamers it's created a special understanding between all of the users. There is a understood reverence for what a certain Japanese electronics company did in the early 90's. As a result the people who feel that way are a unique set of individuals, compared to a community of say Halo addicts or even Sega fans. NG.com is special. And to a large extent elitest, all the hazing has to do quite heavily with the overall dynamic of this social group.
The rise of social networking has changed the way we all interact, but at it's core I still find myself going back here, because I honestly value what these people have to say.
That being said as an unrelated aside, I don't really find myself playing games that much anymore and rarely complete any, although I compulsively feel the need to keep buying them. And as a result still frequent these boards, and Kotaku quite a bit. (I think this kind of behavior is getting more common between older gamers)
Is the main website always going to be locked in perpetual 2000 HTML and 10 year old vBulletin systems? Is the primary value the Marketplace forums? Is it just a strong discussion board? Is it about the bonds and the friendships that we've made? Is it about the handful of posts/questions posted in General Discussion/News and Rumours? Is it about addiction? Is it about nostalgia/going back to a time we remember, or wish we had?
What is it to you? Why does it keep going?
So we came for the Neo. We stayed for the drama.
Now what?
