I agree with you about Yuzo Koshiro - I was incredibly disappointed with the Shinobi: Art of Vengeance soundtrack. The stylistic direction that he and Tee Lopes went with was a complete disaster, achieving not one single memorable track, IMHO. I also agree that his Earthion soundtrack sounds like he's trying too hard to recapture what made him relevant in the past, instead of just tapping into his boundless creativity and aural brilliance - and that's coming from someone that's a huge fan of his work.

What you said about creating chiptune music in the modern age is a good point as well. I don't know of anyone that would be up to the task of creating that aesthetic & sound, and the specific epic quality of it that we all fell in love with in the 80s and 90s at the arcades [and on home consoles of that era].

Yes, I'm glad you pointed out chiptune specifically as I overlooked mentioning it specifically but was 100% implied. I am not really impressed with "CD quality" music and soundtracks. I find them more an irritant.

To me, most 2d video games need to have high level chiptune tracks.

CD music feels innapropriate and out of place for 2d. Takes away from the identity/personality of a game.

I was with you until the final sentence. Sega CD and Turbo CD music was mindblowing in the 90's.

and that's coming from someone that's a huge fan of his work.

It's mostly the huge fans who pose the biggest problems for creative people.

Many of them simply want your first legendary album or hit single, again and again and again. Give them something new, something you actually care for instead of endless rehashes and you will be boo'ed off the stage.

That said, it's high-level critique calling Yuzo out coz even if the Earthion tracks don't really have the same weight and relevance than his works for the Bare Knuckle games (specially part 2) or some others, they're still ahead of most of the cruft that comes out of the speaker in many current games. Loads and loads of AI-generated preset bs drenched in a shit ton of fx to make it bearable and give ppl who have spent thousands on home entertainment stuff something to play.

Let's just say, it's not the 80s/90s anymore, for the better or worse.

If you are going to tell me Terry's Theme OST in FFS on cart is better than the AST, I'm going to throw cotton balls at you until you are fatally wounded.

On the other hand, if you are going to tell me the AST credit roll/ending theme in KoF2k is better than the OST, even more deadly cotton balls will fly yer way.
