There are some aspects of the site that people feel are over the top. There are things I won't personally engage in - but I don't begrudge anyone else.
Agreed, 100%. There's a bit that happens here that I think is over the top or distasteful. I know I do some things that others would classify in this way. Say what you want about how we run the site. There is wide berth given to most things. We have very high tolerance but clearly defined rules. We are all adults and I expect you behave that way.
We live in a free society and this IS the internet. So long as things are in their rightful place and you know how to navigate the site - you shouldn't have ANY problems. It's sort of refreshing to have a site represent the real world where people speak and engage as they choose - this site can accommodate all kinds. It isn't liberal, conservative, mouthbreathing, or any of the other ills that i'd attribute to most forums.
Another great point. I'd say that a lot of the discourse in Unrelated is pretty damn insightful and sharp. It's not mid-2000's here with political threads dominating and Unrelated being more political than a stroll through MSNBC/CNN/Fox News/Al-Jazeera, but it's still pretty strong and interesting.
People have probably seen things like "I hope you die of XXXX cancer and your XXXX pisses on your grave" - and they think, "How vulgar, that's ridiculous, grow up and I don't want to be on the site (except when it's convenient, for the dealz!1!)."
I don't know who does that sort of behavior, but that's just ABHORRENT! Who would do something like that?
Here's the thing though - that happens in ONE section of the site (The War Room) where things like that are part of the deal - if you are offended, it's understandable, then stay out of that section. Honestly I think it's a very novel idea that a forum has a sub-forum where you can come speak your peice as freely as you like without fear of backlash. It isn't for everyone but i'm always of the belief - if someone is going to same something I hope they'll say it to me, rather than either holding their tongue for fear of punishment from moderators OR saying the same thing, but saying it in PM's instead of directly to said member.
I'd rather be stabbed in the front any day of the week. There are plenty of folks who get their bad blood and hatred out with other members frequently but openly. Are there a few little bitches running around here (or elsewhere) that don't do that? Sure... but they're not really respected. We all know who they are.
It's healthy, it gives this site its unique flavor.
I've had some head butting with folks over the years but I respect those folks (at least most of them) for coming here and saying what needs to be said. There shouldn't be any fear of "corporate retribution" because it quite simply doesn't happen. I don't see any mod as the kind of person that would do that either.
I'm of the mind (and other mods are) that free speech here is encouraged and fostered.
Hell, if Shawn wanted every person who said a negative thing to each other or him out of anger or boredom over the years gone, this site would be empty.
[quote\I like a forum unlike NA where people bump the same sale threads with extreme prices or "make an offer" and if you say
anything the mods jump on you to either "buy something or say nothing". We all know it's lame - here you can speak up, there (the collective there) you have to hold your tongue.
I like a forum where people are at odds deal with it publicly instead of having it squashed without ever having actual resolution.
I'll say this as well - as "nasty and meanspirited" as this forum has a reputation for being - this is the only forum i've been on where my religious signatures or points of view have never been blasted for sake of blasting them. For being a horrible meanspirited forum - this is a pretty tolerant bunch and tolerance goes in all directions.[/QUOTE]
We are very tolerant.
It's like a giant family. We fuck with each other but we don't let anyone else fuck with you. We know what's off-limits and what isn't. Sometimes people step over the line but they're dealt with internally. We mete out our own form of justice.
