Sorry if this has been posted before, had no time to visit ng.com during the past few weeks...

I'm a huge Carpenter fan, and The Fog always has been one of my fave films ever. It basically was a low-cost movie with production cost of (initially) less than a million dollars and wasn't very well-received right from the start, but it gave me and many other horror movie enthusiasts some really good chills, even tho The Fog isn't exactly a horror movie.

When the release of the new Fog had been announced in Europe, I was completely torn - a remake could mean better scares, but is there a remake that lived up to its big name? Nope, not as far as I know...

Haven't seen the remake yet and I'm not sure if I should, but I'm interested in hearing your story about The Fog and its remake - good, bad? Why?

Oh, and please try to keep this spoiler-free.

The original movie always freaked me out, but I just assumed the remake would suck. I'd still like to se it at some point, though.

This movie has alot to live up too. If they really care(which they don't), they can make this movie surpase the original but nobody but the fans seem to know how to do a thing like that.

Just came back from reading a few reviews and watching trailers, and this lowered my interest in the remake. A PG13-rated "scary movie" with pantyshots? Ooo-kayy...

I mean... Fog is the last movie I expected them to make a remake of, seems they're running out of recycling material.

The new CG fog looks kinda lame as well.

Pretty damn terrible imo.

It lacks any of the cheesey charm that Carpenters better films have. However Laurence Fishbure is a badass in it.

I think that's the basic problem with remakes and specially remakes of early Carpenter stuff, it's pretty much impossible to recreate that special low-budget atmosphere and the unique lightening of films like The Fog, Precinct 13 or even Dark Star.... what's more, many directors' tastes in aspect ratios, cutting and specially camera angles have changed dramatically over the past 25 years, just compare the quiet and calm pictures and cuts of the original Fog to the remake or other current material, it's like you'd compare a snail to a hummingbird on speed.

Conclusion: You can't just take a major thrill/scare element, story bit or theme out of an old movie, build a new shit story around it and hope it'll somehow work out, and directors/producers know it, but remakes still seem to be profitable so we'll probably see more of that crap... I mean, just take a look into the credits of The Fog remake - produced by Carpenter and Debra Hill... shudder...
