Looking at it from a business perspective, Nintendo played that conference perfectly. Yes, they provided very little detail on the WiiU, but I don’t think it is because it is lacking in terms of features or performance – I think they intentionally revealed very little to keep some of their cards hidden.
When you think about it, they accomplished 2 things with the WiiU reveal. (1) they got everyone’s attention with that crazy controller and (2) they made it very clear they are going after Microsoft’s and Sony’s market share. But what is awesome about Nintendo is that they are doing it their own way.
It’s a perfect example of why playing “follow the leader” can be dangerous. Microsoft and Sony did this by going after the Wii crowd with Move and Kinect, but they failed pretty miserably. Nintendo on the other hand, is doing the same thing that Microsoft and Sony attempted to, but instead of trying to switch hats and play catch-up with them, Nintendo further developed their core competencies and are going after Sony and Microsoft on their own terms in their own way. Regardless of whether the WiiU sucks, I have to admire their guts and business savvy.
I’m excited for the WiiU!
