That is a really bizarre, but well-known phenomenon...there are a lot of older peeps who work on that shit who have technical skills, but NO sense of design or artistic sensibilities.
Everybody's seen at least one really wack cab. That link is pretty hilarious though.

I once saw an SFII cab with the six buttons placed AROUND each stick. No joke...wish to God I had pics. It was at a Sears arcade way back in 1991. lol
