I'm kind of late here, but I don't think it's been released yet. Definitely a interesting idea. Looks like Bone Thugs in Harmony is following suit. RZA does bring up a good point that music isn't respected as much as an art form as it should be. I personally think this idea is really cool, and annoying at the same time. Especially if it ends up being a really good album, and I am unable to own one.

What you all think?

Well... I commend the ingenuity behind it. It's a smart move from an artist/entrepreneur standpoint. But why the FUCK would you pay for something you haven't even seen (heard) yet? Art is generally bought and sold for the invocation of emotion it creates. So from that angle, I think it's fucking dumb.

And also, it's rap. If they actually sang and played instruments, I may be more inclined to accept it.

I just want to hear it for free.

It'd be even funnier if whoever buys it just tosses it into the fireplace and watch it goes up in smokes. XD

I think it's a pretty good idea actually. I'd rather laugh at some rich fanboy than listen to their next album.

...yeah, "A Better Tomorrow" was this bad.

The album is said to "tour the world" first, then be sold.

I understand the rap point completely, but I think there is a legion of RZA fans, including myself, who would argue that RZA is one of the, if not the only digital artists that can be considered an "artist". I like rap and all, but it doesn't compare to classical, or rock in terms of artistry, but RZA is in a whole other league. He's pretty amazing. At least in my opinion.

You know what I used to hate when I was a mad trashing kid (metal years of "Is not Brutal enough!" phase) and I wanted to get into some new release I haven't heard and yet I liked something about either concept art, song titles, group name all that jazz? The fact that you couldn't tell what you were getting into, I felt it wasn't fair for you a consumer to buy something so blindly. The internet changed that, big time! Now artists have to step up their game, you want acknowledgement? Make better records! Stop using filler! Music is still important to us if the music is genuinely good, if people didn't care about new releases then hey that's their call, I don't think music should be made for the people to like it, make it so you like it, you love it, and if that's the case the rest will follow.

I think this could also be said of just about everything. People used to pay before the goods were even properly presented, such a scheming system, buy and then decide if you like it or not, fuck that shit! I wanna buy what I like, fuck Metallica after burton died, they rode that wave and people blindly bought their shit and guess what? Some of it was ok but most of it stunk, horribly, to the point of hatred.

I dunno, maybe I'm just off base here but fuck that stupid ass museum plan, if you don't have faith on your record fuck off!

"They found a way to make you pay concert prices without having to perform."

I'd say that about sums this up quite nicely. This isn't about artistry, or even about music in general. It's a thinly veiled cash grab with the least amount of effort on their part. I really, really hope this comes back and bites them in the butt hard.

Not sure where the idea that music isn't respected enough as an art form comes from. Perhaps the huge amount of money that people spend on records, the hours upon hours people spend listening to it, the fortune people spend going to concerts, the countless magazines devoted to talking about it, the veneration of music stars to godlike status, the endless worldwide awards ceremonies, the timeless nature of classic and classical music still listened to hundreds of years later, the adoption of music as theme tunes for entire nations, the integration of song lyrics into the lexicon and identity of the human race or the use of music to try to capture and convey the very nature and essence of humanity in alien contact attempts isn't quite enough for this guy's fucking enormous ego.

I think it was inevitable. and a damn interesting venture/experiment.
art is a cash grab nowadays so why not? and conceptually it could open un a whole new area in art. I think it's interesting.
I wouldn't at all be surprised if videogames and other entertainment 'products' have their own addition to this possible future trend.

edit: though on the flip side it does smells of pompous bollocks.
hip hop is riding a wave right now creatively speaking (even if it isn't to everyone's taste) - pretension ensues.
yeah, I don't know what to think. the level of controversy is interesting though

Maybe they were lip syncing like Milli Vanilli, but don't want to risk getting caught.

“The idea that music is art has been something we advocated for years,” RZA said. “And yet it doesn’t receive the same treatment as art in the sense of the value of what it is, especially nowadays when it’s been devalued and diminished to almost the point that it has to be given away for free.”

Art is given away for free all the time. RZA's lost it.

Now this theme is art! As for the RZA, I'm still a fan, but his and the Wu's music has taken a decline over the years. Raekwon though, is still as amazing as ever.
