With first editions, part of it comes down to how many were printed to begin with. And with famous authors of the past few decades, the print runs are often so vast that I don't know how long it will take for something to be deemed valuable.

I have a few first edition hardback novels from the '50s and '60s... a few Fleming and a couple Spillane. I only bought them to read and I only bought them because they were either the easiest or the only way for me to get those particular books at the time (early '90s). And they weren't all that expensive even then. If I'd bought them as collectibles, I'd probably be disappointed, because I don't think they're worth any more now than they were.

Yeah I didn't but them as an investment. When I was a teen I had to have them when they first came out, not the limited leatherbound editions though.
$35 is almost the cover price on one of them. Several years ago I sold about the same amount of paperbacks for $60+.
