I played the Last Hero of Nostalgaia last week. Took a little over 24 hours to clear the base game and all the dlc. Didn't get to fight the two secret bosses because the questline that leads to both of them broke (needlessly, imo).
Iron Pineapple covered it in a
Steam Dumpster Diving episode three years ago and I think his assessment is good. The game is frustrating because it's built around an incredibly potent idea-essentially Dark Souls, except the stagnation and the decay in the world are due to the hero of a previous cycle refusing to "link the fire" by entering the collective unconscious to be transmuted into an archetype-but squanders the idea by focusing on thoughtless and indulgent references to other works. The relationship between
nostalgia and stagnation is almost unexamined. Is the choice really between clinging to particular stories, letting them be subsumed into the monomyth template, or forgetting them altogether (my understanding of the reservoir of pain's questline)?
Oh cool though, this dungeon is the End of Time.
lol so true though. And I guess I hadn't thought about the resemblance between Sen's fortress and the medieval-themed levels in Quake.
Worth $12 for the base game + DLC (current sale price on Steam)? Sure, but it's almost like its flaws are the most compelling thing about it.
