I saw CNN get knocked earlier, but where are we going for general "straight" news?
Like, I know there are plenty of substacks and blogs where I can read about how CNN and the rest of the media fucked up a story but what alternatives are not locked behind paywalls?

What's going on in Canada is a government crackdown. When it happens in Cuba, we call it an anti-democracy crackdown. Well, Trudeau doesn't, but American press does.
Restricting the free movement of people.
"Ottawa police began locking down a wide swath of the downtown area, allowing in only those who live or work there after they pass through one of more than 100 checkpoints, the interim chief said."
Declaring a peaceful assembly illegal, and using the language of the War on Terror against fellow citizens.
"They are a threat to our economy and our relationship with trading partners,” he said. “They are a threat to public safety.”
Seizing individual financial assets, and preventing private individuals from engaging in free association by openly petitioning places like GoFundMe to pick sides.
'Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said the government began freezing truckers’ accounts as threatened. “It is happening. I do have the numbers in front of me,” she said.'
And most egregious, remember that your children are always one political dissent away from becoming wards of the state.
"Police were especially worried about the children among the protesters. Bell said police were working with child-welfare agencies to determine how to safely remove the youngsters before authorities move in."
