So after a number of years, I played and beat MGS again.

Mixed bag about Twin Snakes, huh?

I don't know, the information I saw didn't make me think much about it.

It looked pretty on the GC hardware but the idea of new dialogue and scenes actually turned me away from it more than anything--was never a fan of those types of additions in films I've enjoyed and the same would go for MGS.

I'll probably go through it another time then because I am kind of psyched to go through Sons of Liberty again.

Imagine MGS with the camera and control scheme from MGS2. The cutscenes are more cinematic, and the dialogue was meant to be "less campy". I wouldn't say it's better than the original, but it's a different experience. For example, being able to look and shoot in first person view totally alters the battle with Revolver Ocelot, and almost makes it easier.

I'd say it's at least worth checking out once.

I don't get how people say they hate Twin Snakes because of all the crazy matrix cut scences. I mean there is just as much if not more crazy bullshit that goes on in 2 and 3.
I like TS alot. I thought it was just as good as the first. Although the control scheme for the GC controller was pretty shitty.

"Almost" makes it easier? You can beat Ocelot in less than 30 seconds without moving if you use the first person view. First person mode makes the game incredibly easy. The problem is that while you have all the moves from MGS2, the environments weren't altered in any way other than to look better.

Some of the voice acting falls flat, certain lines aren't delivered with the same tone as the original and its definitely noticeable. The returning voice actors do a pretty good job again (Naomi and Mei Ling lose their accents though, for some unknown reason). The new voice for Grey Fox is actually better than the original IMO. And while the cut scenes are completely ridiculous most of the time, some of them are really cool (pretty much every scene with the Ninja is fucking sweet, especially the final battle with the Metal Gear). Graphically the game looks fine, nothing spectacular but not to shabby either.

I'd say my one biggest complaint was the GC controller. While it doesn't take a long time to get used to, if there was ever a series designed with the Duel Shock controller in mind, its MGS. First person view is mapped to Z, which is the worst possible placement if you ask me, but they didn't have much choice either. Go into first person view and try to strafe to the right, you will have to bring your middle finger up to the R button. The lack of analog buttons kind of hurts the game too. One tip, while aiming your weapon if you slide your thumb to the Y button and hold it then release the A button, Snake will lower his weapon without firing. And don't even consider using the d-pad to control Snake, but we all know about the GC's d-pad so I won't explain this.

Overall, Twin Snakes is a good game. When compared to MGS games with the Kojima shine on them, it falls short. It seems rushed at times. I was disappointed with the lack of any new material other than a Boss Rush mode. But do play it if you like the series.

I can't lie, I'm a hopeless sucker for those over-the-top action sequences but I don't think I'd want to see them in MGS (just talking about the first one of course.)

The whole experience/mood of that game is just too perfect as it is and I'd don't think I'd want to see it changed with those kind of additions.

I'll end up playing Twin Snakes eventually and will enjoy it because I do love the series (reminded lately just how much I do), but from what I've seen so far, the whole concept of TS just seems kind of unnecessary.

I always wondered how good this game was played via Bleem on Dreamcast. I still have the Bleem disc that I never got around to using.

It looks great, especially figuring that you can use the VGA out as well. It makes for a super clean package. That is the only reason I miss having my Dreamcast.

As for the game, it’s one of the most amazing games I’ve ever played. It truly was a complete package, it had it all. It will easily remain in my personal “Top 10” games of all time.

Naomi losing her accent, unacceptable. But as an asian american, Mei Ling losing her accent? GREAT. She doesn't sound like a goddamn Asian American stereotype. In MGS1, I was waiting for her to say, "I RABU YOU RONG TIME" :very_ang::very_ang:

Not only does Twin Snakes add MGS2 gameplay elements into an environment that wasn't designed for them, but it also adds the M9, which in addition to the first person shooting ability, makes the game even easier

This gives Twin Snakes a very different atmosphere when compared to MGS, as the majority of the original is spent actually sneaking around and avoiding all contact with enemies apart from the sections when you are forced into combat.

This is all stuff that I only realise in hindsight as I played Twin Snakes before I ever played MGS. Therefore, Twin Snakes is worth checking out for curiosity, but I'd say it is only worth playing if you have never played MGS before, or are a big fan of the original and must see what they did with the remake.

I have beaten MGS1 like 15 times, and every time is great. It's just one of those games...

I have beaten Symphony of the night like 20 times too :emb:

Metal Gear Solid was one of the Playstation games I enjoyed most. I'd say top ten for the system. After reading this thread I'll have to check out Twin Snakes and Snake Eater...

Seriously though, it will be pretty hard to top the original for NES.

considering the ridiculous action in the second and third Metal Gear Solid games I think Twin Snakes fits in better.

You know you can set that first person view to toggle with the Z trigger right?
I know it's not as nice but once you get used to it you don't notice anymore.

The dialogue is much better in the Playstation MGS, I really don't think they should have redone it. Also become over cinematic. I like PS version for it's simplistic concept but still offering a challenge.

On a somewhat related note...

Twin Snakes is a hard game to track down while Sons of Liberty was only $5 used.

This thread made me want go back to Twin Snakes and finish it (I stopped playing for no reason a month ago and never beat the original because I suck).

I'm so bored at work right now that I'm trying to read this analysis on MGS2's ending since I beat that game and it was confusing as hell. I've hardly gotten anywhere in it and my brain hurts already.

Talk about mind fuckt.

It's a great site and that analysis is very good as well.

I read it back in the day, just after finishing Sons of Liberty... even bought myself some books on Memetics :emb:

The great thing about going back to games is when you forget about stuff while playing through them again.

Totally forgot all about Olga's pit hair and started cracking up when I saw it again.

Also forgot how much fun it is to shoot tranquilizers into the crotches of unsuspecting guards.

Yeah, because those games are very similar to each other. :spock:

If you like Lucas Arts adventure games, you'll like Snatcher. I do LOVE Snatcher, but it's nothing like Metal Gear Solid.
