I debated if I should post this in the post your recent purchases thread, or if this level of goobness deserves it's own thread. I decided with the amount of pictures I would probably just start a new thread in the collection gallery. Anyways, (almost) finished product first:

I bought this big red revision 2 from a guy over in ft worth about a year and a half back, with the intention of restoring it. When I got the machine it was in pretty rough shape after a few decades of neglect;

The vinyl art kit was peeling in several places, missing in others. The wood had a number of gouges from various moves, in addition to water damage in a few parts as well. The marquee was just a cheap printed pieces of paper, the control panel overlay was a sticker, the joysticks and buttons were very worn out, the third slot on the motherboard didn't read and it had various sound and graphical issues in slots 1 and 4. It needed a lot of work, but the monitor was in good shape and it was something I could tinker around with in my free time.

Here is the machine completely stripped down, ready to begin the slow process of putting it back together. I sanded down anywhere with gouges or water damage and used plastic wood to fill those gaps back in. Once I had the cab back to a satisfactory place I pained the bottom half with black semi-gloss, which after the fact I think I should have used something with more gloss, but it looks pretty decent as is.

Afterwards it was time to apply the new vinyl art kit I ordered from Szabo's arcade, which was a giant pain in the ass putting it on. Once again it looks alright, there is definitely room for improvement and I wish I would have used an exacto knife to trim off the access instead of a box cutter. I also got a reproduction marquee and control panel overlay from Szabo's arcade, the control panel looks great but the marquee's color is a bit off from the rest so I should probably follow up with him at some point for a new one. Also got new IL joysticks and buttons as well as new t-molding from t-molding.com, and new speakers to replace the old ones which were falling apart.

I found a local guy to fix my board through one of the neo geo facebook groups, he mentioned he was a member here and had contributed technical stuff about a decade ago but I forgot what he said his screen name was. Ray if you are reading this, thanks again for the awesome repair job, it works perfectly still!

Finally the LED marquee kit was installed, and just yesterday I picked up the new tempered glass to replace the scratched and fogged acrylic monitor cover to round the whole thing out. The only thing I need at this point is a new coin door, or rather the entire frame as well as the two coin doors, not really sure where to look for a replacement besides eBay?

Either way it's finally finished after a year and a half. It turned out pretty good all things considered, I learned a lot through the process and would probably do a couple things different but oh well, that's life. Here are a couple more pictures I snapped last night once I put the new glass in:

Just a few last titles for my collection and I think I can consider this one done.

@Neodogg come and get yer boy with his dust washers on top!

Pretty sure Ray is channelmaniac since he is also in Texas.

Looks great, now you can stop tinkering and play games...or at least that's what I tell myself.

Nice! Did you use woodfill? I had some major gouges out of the wood on mine, and I used the bondo meant for automobiles that everyone online seems to reccomend. Worked really well for me.

A friend of mine who works in construction recommended I use plastic wood - https://www.lowes.com/pd/DAP-Plastic-Wood-4-oz-Natural-Wood-Filler/4013497

It required several rounds of filling and sanding before it had a smooth end product, but it held up well to drilling in new holes for where the big control panel overlay piece screws into the cab.

Okay, I hope it works well. In my experience with projects around the house that stuff sucks ass. It isn't strong, and deteriorates easily. That's why I was happy the automobile bondo felt so strong. Glad folks online pointed me in that direction.

Damn, i hope it does as well. Worst case scenario i just sand it all down and repatch it with something better. It wasn’t perfect anyways, and you always do something better the second attempt.
