Recca is legitimately a good shmup. It's a technical marvel considering how weak the NES is as a system (8 sprites per line, 64 total). It's far better than anything you'll see on the SNES, although that's not too hard to compete with.

Yagawa is a genius.

And I'm not throwing randoms out there:

My issue wasn't console vs arcade to be honest. How is Darxide a shmup? Who is going to want to play Giant Insect for a month? So Recca wins by default... it seems a little silly is all, nothing personal Jim. I think you should stay the course with your original choices, maybe too late for that.

There's plenty of console shmups that are quite good.

Of the new list, I vote Zedblade.

Recca is cool, I totally wouldn't mind that one. Oddly enough I met the biggest Recca geek I've ever seen about a month ago; he looked like he was 14 or so. Very interesting to see a youngin' totally devoted to a game way before his time.

For the other list, Zed Blade would probably pull in some extra attention being a Neo game. Illvelo is the only Milestone shooter I haven't played yet though.

Really digging the music in Zed Blade. It goes from corny jock jams to jazz in the span of a level. The game over music is great too.

So I decided I should take a closer look at how scoring works. The process went something like this:

1) Play the game it to stage 5 with around 1.5 million -> feel like a badass.
2) Watch a video of someone get 1.8 million on the first stage -> oh.

If you win the month I can either refund you or credit your purchase towards a future month.

yeah I noticed there was some total gayness going on with the scoring, example boss 2 can be milked for hours. just don't shoot the head, shoot the body and avoid the projectiles. no timer. but nothing of this magnitude lol
