I totally understand you.
I recently got addicted to shmups, and i participate in here to have some "companion" and can discuss and learn some key aspects of the games.
But for me, playing the game for the high score kills almost all the fun, i just like to try to survive and make it further into the game with each try.
I know shmups are all about high scores, but i hate that and still love them![]()
Well, not *quite*. I actually do like competing for high scores quite a bit. It's just this damned game's weirdly broken scoring mechanic...it just ruined it for me, and then on top of that the fact that there's just such an overwhelming advantage score-wise to use Uncle Beard...and that finishes off the rest of it for me.
On the surface, the game just has so many neat options and choices, right down to the pilot you choose. But taking a look at the scoreboard, it's pretty clear those options...well, aren't...options. You're foolish if you choose anything else because as far as the competition goes they just aren't the right answer.
Now, I don't expect (or want) perfect balance...everything should have it's strengths and weaknesses, but this just doesn't feel right in a "do exactly what you're told or there's no point in bothering" kind of way. That's the part that killed the fun for me
