I totally understand you.

I recently got addicted to shmups, and i participate in here to have some "companion" and can discuss and learn some key aspects of the games.

But for me, playing the game for the high score kills almost all the fun, i just like to try to survive and make it further into the game with each try.

I know shmups are all about high scores, but i hate that and still love them :lolz:

Well, not *quite*. I actually do like competing for high scores quite a bit. It's just this damned game's weirdly broken scoring mechanic...it just ruined it for me, and then on top of that the fact that there's just such an overwhelming advantage score-wise to use Uncle Beard...and that finishes off the rest of it for me.

On the surface, the game just has so many neat options and choices, right down to the pilot you choose. But taking a look at the scoreboard, it's pretty clear those options...well, aren't...options. You're foolish if you choose anything else because as far as the competition goes they just aren't the right answer.

Now, I don't expect (or want) perfect balance...everything should have it's strengths and weaknesses, but this just doesn't feel right in a "do exactly what you're told or there's no point in bothering" kind of way. That's the part that killed the fun for me :(

LOL. Hey, if a game isn't fun to you, it's not worth playing. I'm with you on that one.

However, there is nothing broken in Zed Blade, and Wave Uncle Beard being the path of least resistance doesn't make it any less of a game. The mechanics in this game have been laid out, and you'll find out more and more that "Doing exactly what you're told to do" is a common motif as far reaching the bottom line in shooting games.

I have to admit, the whole shooting the ground thing kind of took the wind out of my sails. I haven't touched the game since hearing about that.

It's probably too late, but I was thinking about having separate scoring categories for each ship. This doesn't alleviate the shooting the ground as fast as possible problem, but at least it's something.

Seems like you're beating a dead horse lolololol

I certainly did. RIP Zed Blade...I have fond memories of the 10 minutes we spent together. Shooting at background scenery will never be the same again.

Not for me...
I really don't like playing shmups for score, so Star Soldier R has nothing to offer.

Star Soldier R has a pretty good 5 minute mode. I remember having a large group of people playing at one of the Chicago shmup meets, with everyone watching and learning from each other, and improving over the course of the day. That seems to be a great way to learn a game quickly.

Alright! Jeneki w/ the win, and EM w/ the '2nd place' (by second place, I mean he gets the 2p prize by default, as the only side game entrant).

Sorry for my waning participation; a combo of real life + gaming life issues really came to a head, in January.

I'll be in touch w/ EM, to facilitate Jeneki's 1st place prize-January's shirt o' the month!

The 2nd place prize is naomi2 related...

Thanks all, for playing &/or reading along.
