If I remember correctly, at least in Ohio, attacking an officer is a felony offense.

In my state, striking a police officer isn't even a crime in itself.

I saw the video, I don't know about these "strikes". I can't even tell if they even were "Strikes". I mean, if they were such a big deal, why wasn't she charged?

I'm sure there are some lawyers here that can step in and speak on that. If you are an officer, and someone tries to assault them you don't dick around and see how things develop. You take them down before things get worse. I have seen officers assaulted, and I know it is very much a reality someone could go for your gun. I have seen it first hand. If someone attacks you, they're that much more likely to take the next step.

What had happened if he kept playing nice, and she did grab his gun and fired? He would still be fired. It's not an easy choice for the officer, especially when any of you have ever been in a fight probably know, once attacked your instincts take precedence over rules your job creates to protect people who mean you harm. Civilians have all the rights. In order for that scenario to be accepted she would have had to take his gun, and he would have had to disarm an armed child.
.

You watch too much tv.

I can't believe they still make 1 piece desks.

Those damn things last forever. They might have been made in the 70's.

If she had any academic issues or special needs, the school sees fit to find a reason to expel the student since they won't have to pay to support her and it won't count against them if she drops out.

This is why schools escalate these types of situations and involve law enforcement in routine disciplinary matters.

You know, its funny...I was thinking the same thing. Those damn things are just horribly uncomfortable...they were 20 years ago...

Nothing like sitting in an uncomfortable class, in an uncomfortable chair.

Probably the same shitty desks from 1998 when I was in high school. I need one, they're so good for cracking your back.

Also, apparently she doesn't have any parents. Her mom died recently & has a foster mom. She is a new student who doesn't talk much according to her classmate. Who knows if that's true but whatever, the cop shouldn't have even been there. Maybe its just that school but i never had cops unless they were part of the D.A.R.E. program.

Kids act up all the time, especially teenagers. Similar incident happen when i was in highshool kid didn't want to take off his hat. Teacher went back in forth yelling match with him. He didn't take it off, he didn't go to the principle office but the following day he wasn't wearing his hat anymore.

Really though, everyone should be punished.

Cop lose his job, probably should go to jail
Teacher & Administrator needs training
Kid should get suspended

Her mom is even more to consider. That rough for her I'm. Sure. But that still doesn't make her immune to rules. It is sad though.

I completely agree with DNSDies. There are so many ways this could have been prevented on the first place. I can pretty much leave it at that and be done. Regardless of anyone's stance on the officers actions, other factors ultimately led to the shitty outcome. Perhaps the kid needs psychiatric care for awhile, and the teacher, and staff need to evaluate their procedures. As for the cop, I'm still kinda torn, and feel for the guy for being put in the position in the first place.

If you all are like me, you graduated almost 20 years ago. Things have changed, people have evolved in 2 directions. One group gets smarter and develop new technology, and make scientific discoveries, the other group watched Steve Wilco, and take guns to high school. High school is a different beast then it was when we were in school. Who knows how long it will take to get out of this so called run of white on black racism. Probably not in our lifetime.

America is a kleptocracy shithole with a sellout government.
It's immigrant blaming, vanishing middle class and rising poverty is more like Wiemar Germany...only with too much banal entertainment, too many diversionary toys, and too many apathetic, fat sacks of shit riding around in rascals for anyone to bother turning full on militant.

From a broad perspective? Yeah...I totally agree with that. That, generally, is the broad scene in America.

But...dig deeper and it's not that bad on a small scale. There are millions of people living here that have "disconnected" enough to remain happy in their day to day lives. As corrupt as our government is, we do not see it on a daily basis. Despite the picture of racial tension the news paints...we don't see it on a daily basis. We don't many of the massive problems daily.

The financial erosion of America is definitely happening...and we're all in for a ride sooner or later.

You're exactly right and I'm a little wrong and lazy with my assessment of the US....if anything, America is like a slow boiling frog while pre ww2 Germany was like a lobster getting dropped in a scalding pot of boiling water.

True that. They could have just finished class, and suspended her. I completely agree. Although she probably wanted a suspension cause I doubt she has decent grades as much of a spoiled brat as she is.

There's enough blame to go around everywhere.

Every person involved involved in this can take a bite of that.
The parents, for not teaching their child.
The teacher, for not handling it better.
The administrator, for escalating a disciplinary action into a criminal one.
The other students, for not calling her out on her shit behavior.
The SRO for not taking a second to realize that when all his peaceful options were exhausted, he needed to plan things better and maybe call one of the other SROs to help him carry her out of the room, empty the classroom, etc.

This is all said with the benefit of an outside eye and not being in the heat of the moment.

It was a fucked situation all around, and while I think the officer needed SOME discipline for his actions, firing him for it is the wrong move, and sends the wrong message.

So you are changing our opinion/position then?

Yeah, a little bit. More information came to light, and I changed my perspective.

Like, I learned that school has 5 assigned SROs.
While I maintain that one officer would have a hell of a time removing a student who was bound and determined to stay in a one-piece desk, two officers would have solved the problem by having one restrain her while the other dragged the desk out.

I don't think it's a fire-worthy or jail-worthy offense though.
Disciplinary action and unpaid leave? Yes.

Yep... One pulls the desk out. If she grabs something to stop it, You have an easy way to slap the cuffs on her.

I don't know about that. THe way he tossed her around is very troublesome.

America is definitely on the highway to hell...that's for sure.

Americans will remain complacent until they lose their luxuries...then (and only then), will you see mass civil unrest. Once they can no longer suck on the government teat, eat their McDonalds, their public schools can no longer fuel their dreams of little Jonny or Sally making it to the "bigs" via bloated, overpriced, useless school funded sports programs, once they can no longer afford cell phones, or televisions, or whatever thing they currently rely on...then shit will hit the fan.

I think that what bother's me the most is how our own media portrays us. I've dealt with foreign visitors often thanks to having Caterpillars world HQ right next to me...I cannot count how many times I've heard foreigners tell me how the majority of Americans are nothing like they thought we were.

Our government is a corrupt, horrible, lying pile of shit comprised mostly of people that should be in jail...but as a whole, Americans are not that way. Now, we're far more guilty of being selfish, lazy people.

and corrupt.

Who? The government or the people. The government is completely corrupt...illegally so, truth be told. As for US people, I find that most people aren't all that corrupt. most people just want to go on with their lives and be left alone. No muss, no fuss.
