It's not 'cos of the rapture that you're selling everything, right?

That's actually super easy. Last home cart I bought was SSVS. Sold that and never looked back.

I had a moment last year.. First time since I sold my last home cart system to Force in '04 - glad its gone.

Wait, what? You don't own any neo stuff anymore? I thought you kept buying and selling back everything, nothing remains? What about those metal slug mvs's? GET SOME NEO SHIT SON

I'm going to grab a 1 slot and a multi cart - makes no sense to own physical carts.

owning neo-geo games is unnecessary. They can be played on the emulator.

Exactly.

owning a fork is unnecessary, you have hands.

People collect stupid stuff, but that's the world we live in. Embrace it.

Doubt he was knocking anyone for owning a Neo-Geo collection - we all have, but some of us moved on.

This is why over the years I only bought games I know I want to own. Sure, I bought games not knowing what I was getting myself into, but I would either sell them soon after or keep the ones I like. I store most my other game stuff at my parents house. These are the ones I like to give it a go, once in a while. Some good examples of this is Xbox and N64 stuff. I will never part with my NES/16-bit/32-bit and some PS2 stuff.

If you are worried about your stuff getting sold off by siblings, just label the box your name and photos or other sentimental type stuff. Then put a note in the box on top saying Do Not Sell with a warning message of choice. That way there are two fail-safes so to speak.

i'm sure a warning message would have stopped my lardo sister from copping my modded PS2, all my games, and accessories, then going back for my 64, and SNES in quick succession. only reason the DC didn't get sold is because all the games i have for it are burned games. in short she's a dumb bitch who needs a foot up her fat ass.

Pretty much. :'(

To be honest things aren't good over here... And I have to re-assess what I can, and cannot afford etc.

But space at a premium is the primary concern I will have to really assess what my top 50 or so is, and really stick to it.

I would go the pirate, roms route, but to be honest I can't enjoy games as much when I play them like that. It always feels dirty... Maybe I should just "embrace it."

Times is tough bro... Times is tough.

It is funny how this type of thread keeps popping up.

Unless space REALLY is an issue, then I just don't see the point in selling of your collection.

After you have spent time collating what you have, pricing it all up, taking pictures, sticking on eBay.. only to be raped by the fees and then Paypal fees. Then trawling packages everyfew days to the Post Office to send them. Unless you are getting rid of priceless Gems then it really not worth the hassle, afterall you bought them for a reason and collecting is fun. And as people have said, it maybe years since you have played some of the games, but gaming and collecting is cyclic so one day you will go 'You know what, I really want to play that game again' you'll dig it out and go, shit yeah , I forgot about that game too. And yes, christmas all over again. Cos when that day comes and you have sold, you will be hard pushed to find it for sale on eBay as all the collectors won't be parting with it excpet for an extortionate fee.

I did once sell most of my collection back in the 90s (sadly for drugs of varying degrees) and then a few years later, starting buying it all over again. If you are selling for money, then to me that is a waste of time, you will just end up wasting it on frivilous things and then have nothing.

As for emulating... been there done it. Apart form my Home Carts that I have had for years, I used to emulate stuff in Cab or on my PC and it most definitely is not the same. PC too slow and the gamne feels awful, PC too quick and the game and music runs way too fast.. you will never beat playing the original game media on the hardware it was designed for.

Curt. If anything I now know of amoeba, and I found a vinyl I had been searching for for quite a while at a decent price. It was only $20. Everywhere else it was around $50.

So yea....I hope you the best

you know when i moved to ireland i packed up my games and left em at my parent's house. had boxes of stuff, they put it in the closet of my old room, and there they sat. i went back there in january of this year my sister had come by, taken what she could carry, and sold it off like some sort of drug addict she stole my stuff, sold it, and now when i do go back to texas there's nothing to play. thing is she's not a druggie, or anything like that. she's an overweight 16 year old high schooler who is a total bitch. not much i can do about it now, but once my ma found out she got in a hell of a lot of trouble. even so though there's nothing can be done about it now. that younger sister of mine is a real piece of shit.

I would of valued all of it at NGF.com prices and demanded pay back.

I've gotten rid of about 700 Games and movies so far. And will get rid of another 1,000 I think. I'm just going to keep the really good stuff.
These threads sometimes confuse me until I read how much bulk you really are dealing with. My collection is tiny compared to what you've just sold. Like I've said in many other threads. Just buy what you know is actually a top notch title. I had a brief period of just buying anything, but I let that go real quick.

Well, there is another option as well. For $100 a month or less you can rent a very good size public storage space. I actually have one to store car parts and old things I don't really want around the apartment... I'll tell you, though, I don't even think about that stuff. If it weren't for the car parts and the few pieces of furniture I ditched in there to save room, I'd probably just toss everything else out. Once it is gone, you're not going to miss it. Sure there will be a few games you may want to play from time to time, but is it owning them that you want... or playing them? You can always download ISOs or ROMs and play to your heart's content. I'll likely ditch the rest of my stuff this year simply because I don't see a value in keeping it around. I only suggest the storage space because you'll get it out of your place, immediately, and it is still an arm's length away if you regret not having any of it. If you don't even think about it or touch it for a nice chunk of history, though, I'd just get rid of it.

Unless you have a nostalgic connection to something, it's not that big a deal to get rid of it.
Almost everything can be obtained again on ebay. Not even rare items are really that rare, they just have a cost associated with them.

It's like there is a heirarchy here.
AES for purists
MVS for people that still want plastic, but "AES is silly, it's expensive". Yet you still buy useless plastic.
Get Multicart, still plastic and plays on hardware
Get Mamecabe, plays it all in a cab.
Emulator....
Get a life... stop playing games...

Here's what I own:

2 cabs - 5 JAMMA boards.

J360 plus shooters.

iPad

Laptop

Modded xbox

Don't need anything else.

Someday I hope to reach this philosophical state of bliss where I don't need to collect things.

As much as I enjoy buying and selling things, I think I'm going to try to take something closer to this approach. Having moved back to my mother's temporarily and seeing all the STUFF her and my step-father keep is making me nauseous.. They're not hoarders or anything, they just keep so much stuff, and I don't ever want to feel that bogged down with possessions. So in the past week: I snagged a JTAG 360, sold my US and J 360s, going to put the JTAG in my Blast, use it for MAME and J360 shmups. Also down to just 2 cabs now. With the exception of my PCE collection, all the old gaming stuff is going as well.

Bit at a time I suppose. Going to go through my upstairs bookcase today, not sure there's a lot I'm parting with on that one, but it'll be a start. Into boxes later.

Here's my advice: Don't put a rush on it.

And don't sell your books.

Are books that hard to get back?
Books are probably one of the biggest pain in the asses to store and move. Heavy and dense, and you rarely go back to them.

Space REALLY is an issue.
The books don't seem to have much re-sale value so I am probably better off storing those If I need the space. Man they are heavy though.
I do have a storage unit, but it's fairly small, and nearly filled up. So I'll probably have to get a bigger one, or just keep whittling it done.
One of these days I have to go to that storage unit and just figure out what stuff is actually garbage now. (Old papers, boxes, wires, completely defunct electronics, like Tivo's, random stuff etc)

Probably best to get rid of the shit... papers, cables etc first and then assess the space.
Do the games clearance last as you will only then get rid of what you need to.

The books are easy to get rid of because you can just carry the electronic files in a flash drive. Of course, this practice has run a lot of campus co op bookstores into bankruptcy.

Lack of space is also why I left the Bay Area. Paying $1,500 for a giant closet just got old quick. For what I paid in rent over 3 years I literally could have bought a 3br house in many other major cities.

Unless you want to live next to the Chevron refinery in Richmond. :mr_t:

On topic, I'd start with slowly trimming the fat. Then keep moving it down until you feel like you have a reasonable amount of stuff left that you actually enjoy. Quitting collecting cold turkey will only make you regret doing it and come back at some other time.

I've thought about selling/donating my collection, but compared to others on the site, I have a VERY small collection. I buy movies and games I know I'll watch and play, and when I packed them up, it only took about 3 small/medium boxes (and that included my CDs).

On top of that, I collect high-end figures, and those are a pain to re-buy since sellers like to jack up the prices to double what they're really worth. So my advice would be to keep stuff you know will be a bitch to find and sell off the rest.
