I don't know too much about it, are the cartridges region free? Is it like MVS, US board + JAP game=US gameplay??

No. Some games do not a setting in the dipswitch where you can set the language and the game will work universally on all Bios, but by and large they are region locked and will only play on the proper region.

As more games came out in Japan, you get more bang for your buck with a japanese motherboard.
