Hello...I am trying to purchase a cheap supergun so I can test future board purchases and such. I am pretty tech savvy and wouldn't mind making one but everytime I read about making one...it doesn't go step by step with visual information. Thanks

Building a supergun requires knowledge of the JAMMA 56pin wiring standard. Look that up and I don't see why you couldn't make your own. However buying one can be a lot easier though you don't learn anything. Try for one of those Japanese ones like the http://www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp/Aya/Material/Game/PCB/Vega.jpg

Wouldnt know where to buy them but you can get them, cost you your left nut though.

There's plenty of tutorials. They really aren't that difficult once you understand the following

#1) Jamma Wiring Standard
#2) Jamma Powering standards

It is quite easy to be honest, but I think people run into issues when they try to maximize space and power constraints. Don't skimp! There's a reason the "best" superguns are big and bulky because they use real arcade parts. I think if you build it around a real arcade power supply and stick to either scart or jap 21 pin RGB wiring it will be pretty straight forward.

Yea I wanna get one that is basically built so I can open it up and research it. Plus I want to make my own custom case for it!

They're really not hard to build especially if you can solder. There are shitloads of tutorials and instructions for this like the ones linked above. Just take time to read about the JAMMA standard etc., and make sure you understand what you're doing and why. The reason I build instead of buy is it's easier to deal with extra buttons like the capcom kick harness etc. if you completely understand how everything is wired, and you built everything yourself.

I bought a vogatek MK. III supergun a few years back. extremely easy to set up, just buy PC PSU (preferrably one that has -5v), wire the controllers and youre all set. you can use external speakers, but seeing as how theres a headphone jack, you can figure out how to output on your TV speakers. the s-video puts out a super clean image as well. you might want to invest in a JAMMA extender if you dont want to plug the PCB into the supergun itself.

as for an enclosure, i bought a rather large one - it accommodates all of the components, and its big enough where i can put some of my larger PCBs on top without fear of falling or worrying about where to put them while im playing

Yea...it's strange because reading the tutorials are kinda Greek to me...my soldering skills are pretty basic but I can manage.

Soon you should be having a really good supergun in your possession.

give it a chance dude, it's really awesome when you start to get a hold of the knowledge and start doing the consolizing yourself.
I jumped right into that pool with no knowledge whatsoever regarding electronics nor soldering and I managed to get a fully funcional CMVS, is not very pretty (I still havent found the right encasing) but you can play the HECK out of it.

Tutorials and patience are your best friends on this one :D
