Here's a quick summary of how bad the game gets screwed up if you don't use Japanese. I'd say this is the first Neo Geo fighter where there was a clear-cut decision to support no languages other than Japanese. The English support is a hack.

Using Rera as an example:

Japanese mode only: Intros for every character
ss5reint.jpg

Japanese mode only: Prefight dialogues
ss5repre.jpg

Japanese mode only: First midboss intro
ss5remid.jpg

Japanese mode only: Large intro for 2nd midboss and final boss
ss5rebos.jpg

Japanese mode only: 2nd boss stage
THIS ENTIRE BACKGROUND IS MISSING IN ENGLISH MODE WTF???
ss5refib.jpg

Japanese mode only: character endings
ss5reend.jpg

So if you aren't using Japanese what do you get? Exclusive shot of your character portrait after every fight! Yippie skippie! :oh_no:

Non-Japanese mode only: post-fight portrait
ss5reeng.jpg

Thanks man. You're always one of the best when it comes to shots and information. I can't believe that they left out so much. It's not like SNK to fuck US fans like that.
Would you post a shot of Hanzo's US win portrait? I'm wanting to see his in game art. I haven't seen much on SS5.

They errr... Didn't have the time to translate the background. :D

Nah, I don't know what's happening there.

When I can yes... I do not have SS5 at the moment due to technical issues. I will keep silent about those until they are closed, hopefully it was just my cart.

There's a short Japanese mid-fight dialogue before the background change, so I guess since they didn't want to translate it they eliminated the background change. :oh_no:

Are the english/us carts totally missing all the story flicks or can we buy the eng/us version & set the game to japan language setting to get them on.

Some nice pics there neojedi, quick loading too

It really fucks me off with what they have done, it seems with each new game this year, there have been faults due to laziness.

man that is complete and utter bullshit. hopefully they will fix this? wat excuse could they possibly give? how the hell are we supposed to understand anything?

to me story is a very important part of a fighting game. i love intros to fights and long quotes and conversations and shit. makes the game awesome.

but now...

I know it may sound foolish, but I will not buy this game unless a version comes out where the Japanese dialogue is translated into either English or Engrish. I don't care, I want something.

Story is also very important to my enjoyment of a fighting game. Sure, gameplay is most important, followed probably (by me, anyway) by atmosphere, but I want a story!

For me it's like a movie, you can have great cinematography, special effects, assemble the greatest cast in the world, and if there's no story -- you got a crap movie I will forget about an hour after I leave the theatre. All right, maybe that's a bit extreme for a game, but I hope you get my point.

I've heard a lot of people rave about VF4 Evo, and I've had some fun playing against friends... but playing one player, it bores the living crap out of me. In the SNK games I love, all aspects come together -- tight gameplay, great characters, atmosphere (including music) and, in most cases, a story.

Even though my Japanese is very limited, I'd much rather play this in Japanese with a story, than in English without one.

Is it possible to play in Japanese mode on an MVS system? I have gone through my dip settings many times I have only found to change the dialogue to Japanese in MS3, or is this what you would have to do for SS0?

unibios, my friend ;)

the only language settings on the us kit are english, spanish, and portuguese.

if anyone is interested, and if neojedi will help me take screens until i get a capture card again, i'll host the storylines on my website for all the characters so that someone can begin the task of translating it all to english. let me know if this is something you guys would like to see.

This is nothing less than a complete outrage. Never before has SNK been so lazy with a SS game. I had been pondering the possiblity of searching for this game but since hearing of this now I'm convinced this is nothing more than a half-assed port of SS4 that's worth nothing more than emulation, although I do like the new characters that aren't based on other characters.

Big special thanks to Playmore and SNK for killing off yet another famous franchise.

Its just another game to cash in for them.
This games used 60% recycle backgrounds and sprites, 20% new characters and sprites, 10% new moves/sprites frame to old characters and 10% effort/programming.

SNKP knows the fans will stiill buy them even without English translation.
English translation need times and extra money....
Maybe they sacked the old engrish translators?
:tickled:

Think of the time taken to produced this title, the release date between SVC chaos, SS5 and Metal Slug5 and even maybe KOF2003.
Within a short period, they can produced so many games.
:spock:
Don't even tell me this game is already in production long ago.
:emb:

I would rather see one or two game release per year with better quality than to see 4 or 5 game a year with rehashed backgrounds and sprites.

Who knows? Maybe you need to input certain codes to enable the English story.

In my opinion, it's not THAT important.
I know I'll be playing this game in 2 player mode 90% of the time anyway.
Also... I'm waiting to see it with my own eyes (like the missing background for the last boss), I can't believe they didn't even test that.

Maybe just the first run of SS5 carts is defective, or something...
Oooor... A bug that only happens with X slots MVS cabs, but not with other cabs or with the Phantom1...

We'll know more about all that with time...

Oh my god...you can play as Poppy?
This is the most amazing development I've ever heard of...and so many of you fuckers are just blazing by that information!

Who the fuck cares about the english translation?

"Are you ready the fight?"
"Prepare to be sliced! Like ham!"

Get real. Play as Poppy and SMILE the fuck up.

*galford being my favorite character, this development is nothing less than earth shattering. im masturbating as i type.

Basically, the translation issue is not that problematic, but on the other hand, it's a damn expensive game we're talking about, one should think that a company that asks lotsa $ for a new game would be more careful with quality assurance, even more as it's not only a missing translation we're talking about here, there are features and a storyline in JPN mode that simply don't exist in US mode... lazy Playmoa strikes again, eh.

Fuck....

they should have called it Samurai Showdown 4.25 Special.

To bastardize it as much as they did for the US market is just fucking ignorant.

This is the game I have been waiting so long for..
I am glad the english is missing parts, all fighting games should be played in Jap the way they are meant to be played....
The english is always realy corny on fighting games, so much better to have no english at all.....

Normally, I'd be upset about missing the English diaolgue, but I'm really not. The thing that I like about the Sam Sho games is the "Japanese" feel about it; the english text just plain sux anyways (Fair & Square...)?

The games is a blast to play, even if you can't understand whats going on. Eventually someone will rise to the task of translating the story sequences. Meanwhile, just enjoy the game.

(Again, I'd rather have recycled backgrounds with every character having thier own, than 8 new backgrounds and everyone sharing. It's obvious the game wasn't started from the ground up, but it's far, far from the "recycled piece of shit" that some are labeling it to be).

The fact is....if you own a non japanese mvs board system then you cant even get to play the game in the japanese mode unless with a unibios chip and therefore would be missing out

If they were going to do this to the cart, then atleast give it a jap setting too, so you could actually get your moneys worth.

They removed all the little things that SS was known for, and without any endings or intros whatsoever the game is nothing less than another Street Fighter or KOF. Then again there are those fanboys who are despirate for a new SS game and wouldn't care the quality of the game as much as the quantity.
