Just read a fantastic interview about him a few months ago where he discussed his relatively new clean life.

Given his past lifestyle, even if he was successfully sober, he might have weakened his body to the point he had a mild cardiac episode, etc, that temporarily incapacitated him and being in the pool, without anyone watching over you, voila: a recipe for disaster.
