I’m cautiously excited about this, not biting until there are reviews by people who know their Neogeos. I wonder if SNK still own the original blueprints for custom chips and design? You can’t have an approximation on ASIC or we’ll end up with a product not too different from the Chinese Famiclones from the 90s. And it’s not like that you can update a core on Fpga, so it has to be perfect out of the door.

We will be lucky if it's as accurate as a Chinese famiclone from the 90's. Those things were pretty impressive.

What are the chances, though, that they will be using old school ROMs? I'm assuming at this price it's some type of cheap flash memory on custom PCBs.

At the price point that they are selling the games at I don't have too much problem with flash memory, provided it doesn't crap out after a few years. If the cart shells and cases, manuals, etc. are quality it's goob enough for me.

If the og carts are good on the new system, I'm assuming that the reverse is true. Only time will tell, but they've been doing everything right that I can see so far.

As we've all seen, there could always still be all kinds of weird problems. But for what they're claiming, they really have to ensure full compatibility (like their other "+" systems), which means converters will likely work too.

…Yet is somehow willing to blindly shell out ANOTHER $250-$1000 for whats effectively the same tech their user base gave up on in the first place? Like the Neo X or Neo Mini they already own(ed)? Every ten years comes another re-release with the same software ad nauseam.

However, if in the same breath SNK announced they’d be supporting their built in users by producing new period specific (ie: 1993-97’ era) software thats compatible with both systems, cool. I’d get behind that. I imagine most of the members here would have no issue dropping $75-$100 once a quarter for a new Neo game either. (Hell, back in 2003 it was $300) MOTW 2? Baseball Stars 3?? Magician Lord 2? “Insert most wanted game here”?? Whatever. I’m down. Atleast i’d feel like theres a mutual benefit. We continue to support SNK’s legitimate releases/we get cool new shit to play. Otherwise, no deal. Without new software what the fuck is even the point?

That doesn’t seem to be the case though.

The idea is that for gamers of a certain age, owning a NEO•GEO was the ultimate childhood dream and if you make NEO•GEO readily available and relatively affordable, enough of them will take the plunge to make the venture worth it.

In response to Alec, my OP wasn’t intended to come across as posturing. I have no horse in this race man. Apologies if that was the case.



My first reaction to the news was that this was SNK/Plaion pandering to the speculator market. “Buy the new AES for a fraction of current ‘market value’, becomes a ‘collector’s item’ because its ‘AES’, flip it” then six months from now those $250/$50 entry level system and games double in price etc.



The “spend your money wisely” was meant to be more cautionary to anyone new to the Neo scene expecting prices to regulate in the aftermarket. Theres a large segment of peeps just getting into the Neo that don’t know better and are FOMO-ing.



It was an honest question I posed to my buddy, since he has a couple cabs and a CMVS, yet he already pre-ordered both AES+ systems/games/etc at $1k each. He didn’t really have an answer.



Getting reintroduced to the AES after years away I understand. More curious what the justification is to anyone buying the new AES that currently owns the same hardware? Thoughts?
