Being Developed By Raven Software.

Obviously using the Doom III engine.

Looks nice(not great), I'm looking forward to a return to a single player Quake.

Publisher Activision and developer Raven Software have finally released a new information update and one new screenshot for Quake 4, the next game in the well-known shooter series. The update includes more details on the stroggs, the monstrous aliens that players originally encountered in 1997's Quake II. According to the new information provided by Raven Software project lead Eric Biessman, the alien aggressors will return in Quake 4 in a full-scale war between a squadron of soldiers:
"Quake 4 Updated Info

Earth is under siege by an alien race. The Strogg are cybernetic warriors--a mechanical frame and decaying body parts stabilized by flesh consumed in a systematic annihilation of other species and civilizations. In a desperate attempt to survive a Strogg attack on Earth, an armada of Earth's finest warriors is sent to take the battle to the Strogg home planet. Earth's initial assault force is nearly annihilated immediately, but one marine manages to infiltrate the base, bring down their planetary defense systems, and kill the Strogg's collective brain and leader--the Makron. Earth assumed the destruction of the Makron would end it all, but it didn't.

That's where Quake II leaves off and Quake 4 begins.

The Strogg are quickly regrouping. However, with the Strogg's planetary defenses still destroyed, Earth's forces can deliver a full and final assault. This time, you're not alone. You are Matthew Kane, an elite member of Rhino Squad, and part of Earth's next invasion wave. An army of soldiers are fighting with you and an arsenal of weapons and vehicles are at your disposal in this heroic and epic battle between worlds."

Quake 4 has been in development for some time at Raven Software, a longtime collaborator with Activision and id Software on such games as Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and the Soldier of Fortune series. No official release date has been confirmed at this time. Check back with GameSpot for future updates.

this just seems like a bad idea. they are trying to make Quake into Halo. and wtf, this sounds just like the borg from star trek.

that screenshot isn't that great looking either.

no sarge = fake quake

Quake I is still my favorite of them all. I just really enjoyed that game. The Ogres and Shamblers rule.

I still think Quake II is the best single player FPS of the 90's

Yep, looks like Doom 3 to me.

Yes, yes it does... right down to the similar normal mapping. I swear that character model in a dark corridor would be right at home in Doom 3, too.

Well, it is a modified version of the Doom 3 engine, which is mainly the reason I'm only half-excited about the game. Quake was always known for ushering in the new era of the "it" engine, and for the first time, its using a derivative of another flagship title. Unfortunately, I'll likely be thinking of Doom 3 the entire time I'm playing Quake 4.

I hope Quake IV doesn't go to over the top with "the dark" because that would indeed make it very very similar to DoomIII. That screenshot is not promising about that.

Why is it these days that graphics take so much pride in their dark attributes. Sure it's difficult, but I feel like i've had enough from Doom III, and don't need it again for QIV.

It's way too early to judge, but yeah, that screenshot screams 'Doom 3.5'.
If they make it more of a run and gun, open-fighting against multiple enemies in wide open spaces sort of affair, it could be a lot of fun. Doom 3's big flaw was the endless small encounters with just a few zombies in very tiny corridors. They've gotta crank it up.

If it turns out to be a lot like Quake II with DIII-quality gfx, that could be nice.
They gotta lay off the dark shit though.

Exactly. Dark doesn't mean scary automatically. Doom 64 pissed me off coz I could barely see shit on there.

Raven made Return to Castle Wolfenstein. RtCW had some of the best multiplayer online action around. The beach head level was/is amazing and fun to play.

I'm hoping it's going to be really multiplayer focused like quake 3. It's probably going to be great. I'm excited.

I'll have to wait for some reviews/impressions from this one. I too hope this isnt some lame doom3 clone, and i even liked Doom 3.

FPS wise i'm geared up for the release of Battlefield 2. Some of the new, actual footage of the gameplay is amazing. I'll finally be upgrading for this game if it lives up to an ounce of the hype.

No. Return to Castle wolfensten was developed by Gray Matter Studios / Nerve Software. Of course using ID's IP.

It's not. Quake III was a Multiplayer Only game, with no real story.
Quake IV is going to be a return to the Single Player Schema. (With marginal Multiplay As well) This is was outline by Interviews with ID software. (Some interviews availible on the Doom III collectors disc for the bawks)

I'm a big fan of the first Quake, but never liked part 2 for some reason, it was a bit too action rpg-ish for my taste.

Quake 3 Arena however was and is the damn best fps multiplayer fragfest I've ever played... love the DC version. I heard about a possible fourth part a while ago and hoped they'd come up with another Arena thing, but now that the focus seems to be back on single player again, there's a good chance of Q4 to become another Doom 3 with Quake monsters and a bit of survival horror thrown in for good measure.

Ah well, let's wait and see. The screenshot looks good, but that's not saying much.

I think they choose a dark image to show off the character model.

Q1&2 > all other fps

Has anyone else get Q1 running on window xp? Last time I checked xp needed to be updated and I just don't do that... :smirk:

I agree with Steve. Despite its green/brown/red 256 color pallette, the game was so dark, evil, and depressing that it was impossible to put down.

Quake 2 had some cool things in it. Great music, but by 2/3 throughthe game I was dying to finish it b/c I was bored of it.

Quake 3 doesn't count in my book. It tried to be UT, but playing SP against bots really bites. Gimme a SP story and campaign instead please.

Quake 4... damn sure i'll buy it. But when...

EDIT: Quake 1 and Quake 2 had 2 expansion packs each. They are all must buys. The music on the Q1 expansions is worth the price alone.

That screen looks great. I love the alien3 type corridors. The tomiko reactor on doom 3 has some cool looking cooridors like that.

I really hope they have some big out door deathmatch maps. They need something to make it look different from doom 3.

Quake 1 rocks. I have it on my american xbox (i dont konw how it got there, my brother is a computer guy) Quake 1 was awesome back in the day. The NIN bullets and regenerating skeletons.

I got totally into the game the first time I went underwater and saw little buildings. It was like id had worked some kind of magic to get graphics like that. They clearly have made a pact with the devil.

I've ran Quake 1 on my XP machine. I did need to update my video drivers though. That was with a GeForce 5900 XT card. After that, there were no problems.
