Why is it the japanese:

has a giant "2" medallion behind the logo, while the US one:

does not?

Is this a sequel to a game not released in the US? Did they just leave off the "2" for us?

I have the US one. Maybe its a sequel to a GBC or other Puyo Pop game. I know the Dreamcast had Puyo Puyo 4. Hmm.

Puyo pop for ngpc is a ngpc version of Puyo puyo 2 but since the series (sadly) never been very big in the west the english version is called puyo pop (change the language to japanese for a different title screen and spinning medallion in the intro).

There have been a massive amount of Puyo puyo games released in japan, more than 120(!!!) versions, on various platforms. Check out this list: http://puyo.gq.nu/games.html

Yeah sadly Puyo Puyo never has been unaltered in its trips to the US. It came out as Kirby's Avalanche on the SNES and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on the Genesis and Game Gear.

Puyo Puyo 2 (the one on the ngpc) has been on pretty much every console imaginable. I have the arcade board and it is quite l33t.

The GBA version did not get subjected to any kind of name change over here. Of course the box art for the NGPC one blows the GBA version away :p .
