There is something definitely wrong here.

Yesterday I played about 50 minutes with the PSP.

I turned it off by holding up until it turned off, then I pulled it down to the Hold position.

Today, I play for about 15 minutes, when the PSP shuts off, with a blinking Empty Battery indicator.

WTF

Is this normal?

Also, another question :

There is an option to play games at "Fast" loading speed. What are the drawbacks to this? Will it use the data up faster, corrupting it, or does it drain more battery power, or what?

I've had many similar instances, where I swear I held the off switch in the "up" position while the unit turned completely off, only to find it dead later. It also seems like the PSP battery does not hold a charge while it is sitting unused. If you leave it long enough, it seems to go dead. I have no proof that either of these things is not user error (i.e. it was in sleep mode), but it seems to happen quite a bit.

That's the only real advantage the DS has over the PSP. This never happens with my DS and the battery on it lasts freaking forever. If only the two screens were as nice as the one on PSP...

I played 10 minutes on a full charge yesterday evening, turned it off.

This morning I turned it on, just to see the charge. 64% left after overnight.

Then I turned it on now, only 45% left.

I DID NOT USE IT AT ALL, from this morning, to this afternoon, the battery bled 19% of it's charge.

If I do not play with it the rest of the day, the battery will once again be dead tomorrow morning.

1 Charge = 10 minutes of playtime + 35 hours turned completely off

That supports my observations. The PSP cannot sit idle for very long, which is why my DS has been getting a lot more use lately. It really bugs me. Everyone complains about the PSP's "short battery life", but the 2-3 hours playtime is adequate IMHO. Its the damn battery bleed when the machine is off that I find unacceptable. It means I can never just pick the thing up and play, which is one of the things I like about portable gaming.

The solution is to always have it plugged in. I need to look into a charging stand for it, I guess. It's just a damn nuisance because there's no reason for it. I've never seen a portable device lose battery power during inactivity like the PSP does.

People who are already used to plugging in their mobile phones overnight will have an easier time. I know all about the PSP's battery bleed, but it's never bothered me because I usually leave it plugged in. If you're always on the go though, I can see it being a problem. (Although I wonder how many people actually 'live on the go' and how much that is just an idea romanticized by the portable gaming and hotel industries.)

Sounds like signs to get a new battery, haven't experienced what you are describing even once with mine.

I bought my psp a year and a half ago from a member here and am still on the battery that I received it with, works A-ok.

I never turn it off unless I need to, its pretty much always in sleep mode. There were times when I didn't touch it for quite a while and it still worked fine when I turned it on. Sleep mode takes almost no energy (1% of the usual consumption, is what I read somewhere). So yeah, it can stay in sleep mode for like a long time.

(I'm on my current charge a few days now, used it for a while but its been mostly in sleep mode. It still has 3 bars of energy).

BTW draining the battery completely is a major no-no, it brings harm to the battery. I usually charge mine when there is one bar left, unless I'm away from an energy source.

Yes, I am looking at getting a battery from Play-asia.com :

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-bg-49-en-70-2eij.html

Is that good? It's a good price, I think.

Now, onto more questions :

Q1: I was told you cannot put CPS2, and Neo Geo games on the same memory stick. Is that true?

Q2: If so, is it possible to put CPS1 and CPS2 games on the same memory stick?

Q3: If not, does that mean I would need separate memory sticks for every system? That would suck.

Q4: Is the PSP Slim D-Pad actually better than the Phat one? I think kernow said it's better, and I am COMPLETELY UNABLE to play Street Fighter on the Phat one, a simple DIAGONAL is nearly impossible to be consistent, and pulling off any Fireball motion is completely impossible...

Thanks guys!

Turn off or reboot the easier way WITHOUT touching the power button.

http://rapidshare.com/files/109906159/update_plugin.zip.html

Tested with Slim 3.80 M33 & Phat 3.90 M33.

On windows:
- go to TOOL -> FOLDER OPTION -> VIEW
- disable Hide protected system & SHow all hidden files & folders.

On PSP:
- Go to RECOVERY
- enable FLASH0 (sound will beep on PC & USB connected)
- (on PC) Go to VSH -> MODULE (this is for 3.80 or above, earlier could be NODULE).
- look for "update_plugin.prx", COPY/BACK UP this into your PC. DO NOT cut & paste file!
- unzip the file you just download, copy & overwrite the original file of "update_plugin.prx" in the PSP.
- now press X again on PSP to disable the USB connection to PC.

To restore to original condition:
- same as above method, use the original back up file & overwrite the modded prx.

How to shut:
- go to NETWORK UPDATE icon. Press O to reboot, hold R+O to shut down PSP.

Note: accessing FLASH0 is dangerous. Do not touch anything else other than "update_plugin.prx". Back up original file first then overwrite!

Q1/2/3: who say? LOL
PSP/GAME/MVSPSP/ROMS
PSP/GAME/CPS2PSP/ROMS
PSP/GAME/CPS1PSP/ROMS
Totally separate ROM folder. Works here without prob.

Q4: confirmed OK, I got 1 Slim & 3 Phat. I cant play my KOF2002 MVSPSP on my phat until I modded my D-pad with the "SNES" trick. Tho my brand new untouched Silver Phat, the D-pad feel better. Maybe coz its later revision?

Someone here at these forums, said I need different Sticks for MVS and CPS2.

Anyways, so it's possible? How does it look on the PSP? Folder and then another Folder for games? Because right now I just have PSX games, and I'll use a different Stick for arcade games...

So the Slim one is really better? I was thinking I'll trade for one locally.

Yeah, I've got mine all on one card.

I just got my (fat) PSP from jeffg and have it all set up now. FYI, you have to make cache files for the CPS2 and Neo Geo games before they'll run on the fat. I just googled it to figure out how.

While I'm in here, I have a question as well. What's the deal with the most recent CFW like 3.90? Does it hinder the use of playing certain emulators or running PSX rips? I upped to 3.52 m33-4 yesterday so I could load a more recent PSP game on there, but I'm hesitant to upgrade further because in all my reading over the past few days I've come across conflicting opinions on what works in various different CFWs and what doesn't (or has problems/glitches). Anyone have a clear answer on that one?

Any who, this is a great little system. I'm not big on portable gaming, but it's cool to see so many shmups and arcade games running on this little thing. Plus, a hand full of the PSP games aren't too shabby either. Never thought I'd own one, but there it is.

Okay, one more :

Q: How much size does an average CPS1, CPS2 and MVS game use up?

There is a great sale running this week at Staples here, a $70 official Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo, 2GB, is on sale for $30.

I'm only interested in a few CPS2 games, and some CPS1 games. And a handful of MVS games.

I've got all the CPS1+2 games that aren't fighters or some other unplayable quiz type game or some shit. As for Neo, the size of those varies greatly. They range from a few MBs up to 80MBs for newer games like MS3/4/5 and Strikers. I've got all the games I actually own on MVS minus fighting games on my stick.

All together, I'm coming in a tad over a gig for all that. Mind you, when I made my cache files, I made the program discard the files from the zipped up roms that the emulator doesn't need. That saves quite a bit of space. In my case, almost half a gig.

Okay, I need some help.

I got the CPS1 games from a torrent site, now what do I do?

There's a separate folder with the Zip Files, and a folder with Configuration files for the same games.

I just unzipped one file, Captain Commando, and I got over a dozen files. WTF do I do with them?

In your CPS1 folder, make a folder called ‘ROMS’ and stick the zip files in there. The emulator can run them compressed.

If you couldn't figure that out, you're going to have major trouble with converting your roms for the cache files for CPS2 and Neo games. Good luck because I'm not getting into that... too much to explain. Maybe someone else will be kind enough to do so.

Would it help if I told you what all the files I got in the torrent was? Apparently I have all the files, just need to know where to put what.

If you're on a Windows machine, which you probably are, it's pretty straight forward. I used OS X to do the conversion, so I really can't help you step by step any ways even if I wanted to. It should be pretty much the same though. Open up whatever conversion program came with the emulator (it should be in a folder called “conv” or something similar) and just convert all your zip files of the roms at once. When you're done, stick your roms in the ROMS folder and your cache files in the CACHE folder. Then you should be good to go.

Man those are 2.0.6 version & its very old. The roms use & cached are not identical to 2.3.1 ver.

If you insist using those one then its easy. From that torrent files:

For the CPS1
Rename "CPS1 2.06 ADHOC" to "CPS1PSP" folder & copy into ms0:/PSP/GAME150
Move ROMS folder into "CPS1PSP" folder.
No cache required.

For the CPS2
Rename "CPS2 2.06 ADHOC" to "CPS2PSP" folder & copy into ms0:/PSP/GAME150
Renamed "ROMs ripadas" to "ROMS" folder.
Move "CACHE" & "ROMS" folders into "CPS2PSP".

ps: i got my reason to ask you to rename the main folder's name to proper name.
guide above for Phat only. if doesnt work on Phat 3.xx, then u r missing 1.50 Kernel Add-on.

I tried it today, I get the Icon & Background screen for them, but when I click on either CPS1 or CPS2 icon in the PSP, the PSP color splash screen comes up, and then it says ERROR - Cannot play game or whatever.

What did I do wrong?

I dunno what ur PSP's version but I think I know why it doesnt work.

If you own a Phat 3.71, 3.80 or 3.90 M33, you need to apply 1.50 Kernel Add-on.
Get it here: http://www.dark-alex.org/

I dun think this would work with Slim. I dun have MVSPSP 2.0.6 so I cant try.

Best suggestion, get MVSPSP 2.3.1 (1.50 kernel ver for Phat or 3.xx kernel ver for Phat without 1.50 add-on) then get another roms from MAME 0.20 or higher.
http://nj-emu.tfact.jp/

This WILL solve your problem. Drop that 2.0.6.
