Why is it that all of the good games avoid the PSN? Why is it that all the good downloadable games are only out on XBLA?

Sony has thier silly PSN plus, which is marketed to the roughly 5 mentally handicapped users that were able to use their parent's credit card. Does any one really use it? Did anyone buy Plus for that massive 10% discount (lulz).

You know what's laughable - go on the PSN and take a look at the God of War videos - they're charging people to watch a roundtable discussion on the making of GoW. Okay, not that I would even want to see that if it was free, but seriously, if that a joke? Oh yeah, it's free if you pay for plus.

I don't use the PSN for much (how could I since it has hardly anything to offer), but it would be nice if they released the Fallout DLCs at the same time as XBLA. That was lame.

Now we see Radiant Silvergun and Guardian Heroes being released on XBL. Google Radiant Silvergun PSN and you get a lot of posts on the internet from people confused as to why it's only scheduled for XBLA.

So I feel like PSN, and by extension the PS3, is inadequate, given the current state of XBLA. And yet Sony has the arrogance to try and sell PSN plus memberships. This is taking pages from the 1990 Nintendo handbook, where they lost third party support due to their arrogance, and still figured people would lap up their garbage. Shit's weak.

I need a 360.

Don't even remind me about how they updated their video playback with safeguards to stop people from playing DVD rips, ignoring the possibility that people legitimately own the DVDs the rips came from but don't want to risk scratching the fragile and crappy physical media.

but but but you get FREE early access to old Sega games!

and Plants vs Zombies is FREE right now!

yes I have a PLUS membership but only because I invested in a year a LONG time ago and then the PSN fiasco happened and now my membership has been extended to god knows when. it does suck that alot of the games I want to play havent made it to PSN or probably wont (Radiant Silvergun, Guardian Heroes, Double Dragon II remix, that multiplayer Castlevania title) so I have to wonder what it is that SONY thinks makes this a viable service.

well... yeah...

my system has been solely used as a Blu-ray/media machine

occasionally i'll play a new Uncharted game on it

it is a sad system

especially when compared to the PS1 and PS2

the PS2 has my favorite gaming library of all-time

i kept thinking Sony might pull things around and give me a reason to turn it on for gaming over my 360 but that hasn't happened and doesn't look like it ever will happen

pretty much given up on my PS3 becoming a viable game-playing machine a long time ago

Vita looks surprisingly cool though so i haven't lost total faith in Sony

Is there a way to do voice chat with friends like on the 360 "party" mode? That's one thing I really miss. I hate trying to send messages using the virtual keyboard.

Yeah now that you bring it up, what the fuck is this shit?! On more than one occasion ive tried watching my digital copies of movies that I have stored on my pc via my media server and get this STUPID message about playback stopped because device isnt authorized to use this OR the movie will continue to play BUT the audio will be cut. This pisses me off to NO END. Is there any way around it?

i had playstation plus for the month it was free. i wouldn't pay for it that's for sure. i don't know, PSN really bothers me when i see what XBLA has to offer as far as old/classic games go. but the whole DLC thing bothers me in general. if you already bought the game, why should you have to pay for the DLC? it bothers me how game companies nickel and dime us these days. i feel sony is in the shallow end of the swimming pool these days, xbox even though i feel its an inferior system hardware wise is in the deep end, on a floatie, kickin it with cool old games, loads of free stuff, and a better market.

though that could be a grass is always greener thing because i have a PS3, and not a 360. but then again the facts speak for themselves, and maybe someday i'll invest in a 360, when i have a job and money to spend.

The PS3 is a good system. Terrific retail exclusives, the digital download catalog is stronger than what's available on XBLA, and the PSP (and soon the Vita) support is nice too. But that's where the positives end. The 360 has the the stronger community support. It's just easier to get connected with other gamers and play games with friends on the 360.

To be honest, I'm not sure. I have googled for a workaround, but haven't found anything so far.

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair is, I believe, available on PSN. Or if not, I know it was announced and is coming.

But yeah, Radiant Silvergun and Guardian Heroes are no brainers to me. My guess is that there is some financial assistance or financial boost to Treasure putting these games out for XBLA. Maybe Microsoft threw some money at Treasure to make online versions, or maybe Sony turned the games down because they were niche and old but not quite at that 'retro age' where they'd appeal to the young gamers who have discovered the 8 bit generation.

MS has way more experience in offering online content and running server farms than any of their competitors, and more money to blow on these kinds of things than Sony, at least at the moment. The recent PSN network outages also didn't help here.

I think Microsoft pays a for a lot of exclusivity deals and part of that cost gets passed to us as subscription fees... Which were increased last year I might add.

And honestly, you PSN whiners are just thinking about a small handful of XBLA games you want to play. In reality I, like most users, check the new releases on XBL every week and it's really boring most of the year.

speaking for others: always a good way to devalue a point trying to be made

It's true anyway. If you say you're excited every week when you go on there I think you have bad taste. Honestly, there is a handful of grade A titles each year and most weeks it's disappointed to check. The amount of great XBLA exclusives is overblown.

I believe Radiant Silvergun and Guardian Heroes were announced well before the Sony outages, but I think the point is still valid for the most part.

Japan is an insular culture and they kind of have their own idea about how they prefer to do things like this. They generally follow their own business model when it comes to digital distribution and information exchange.

That said, I do feel Sony owes it to their consumer base to try, as much as they can, to appeal to the largest amount of gamers they can. I think in some respects, they do this very well. In fact, I think they're kicking all forms of ass in appealing to niche markets right now. They just released White Knight Chronicles II for PS3, and I wouldn't classify that game as a major title. It appeals to a specific subset of gamers, and that title isn't on Xbox at all. It's only one example of many, to be honest. Additionally, they get initial DLC exclusives for high profile franchises like Assassin's Creed. So there's a little give and take in terms of what exclusives they offer and how they offer them.

XBLA seems to be holding the ground now when it comes to exclusivity, but a lot of them turn out to be time-exclusives. I'm sure RSG and Guardian Heroes will eventually be headed to PSN.

PSN still has the PS1 library, with $6 per game (for the most part)

And now NeoGeo Station is looking promising. It's not likely to come to XBLA due to MS's exclusivity policy.

PSN+ is a joke.

When it comes to physical games, both systems seem to be on equal grounds, but I find the PS3 to have better exclusives.

Meh. Both services kind of suck in their own ways.

It is easier to party up with your friends on XBL, and that's something Sony should have gotten right by now. But the look and feel seems so cluttered to me. Also, fuck paying a yearly fee and STILL being subjected to ads all over the place.

It's a glorified matchmaking service, since most games are hosted on a peer to peer basis. They charge for it because people will pay. Games For Windows Live is a great example. PC gamers refused to pay for it, and it's free as a result.

Yup, the Japanese have their own idea of online content and business models, that's the very problem here. Ever since Microsoft started catering to niche gamers, PSN lost a lot of its appeal for people like me who are no hardcore japanophiles but still enjoy a nice Nippon-style bullet hell shmup or 2D/2.5D fighter from time to time. This was Sony's domain during last gen, if you wanted the latest arcade imports, you had to own a PS2. There still are many titles that exclusively come out on PS3/PSN but games like Radiant Silvergun or Raiden Fighters seem more appealing to old and new gamers alike than the White Knight games, as good as they may be. It's not only a retro thing either because only RS came out on a home console so far while the RF games never saw proper ports so they're both great choices... yet retro does play a certain role here and MS is better at cashing in on that than Sony in my opinion.

My biggest complaint with the PS3 is that it takes so.fucking.long to install anything. Really, why does it have to be like that? Sometimes I'll start up an XBLA game and it'll download an update, and then reboot it. Takes all of a minute, tops. On the PS3 it can take 20-30 minutes.

I wasted a whole Saturday just formatting the system, too. It literally takes hours.

360 is the better console, hands down.

Better online service, better games and now a better console.

PS3 is good for two things:

1. Codefree-ness for games
2. Watching Blu ray

Everything else sucks. The interface, the update that take forever, the downloads that take forever, the forced installation which takes forever and one of the worst pads ever created.
