1)
1) It's quiet like a sleeping baby. A barely audible hum. With the TV on you simply can't hear it at all.
2) It's heavy like a planet. No, really. It's impossible to pick up with one hand.
3) It's shiny like a mirror. In fact, it's impossible to take a photograph of it without the flash spanging every picture into a starburst mess. And therefore it's massively prone to fingerprintage too, with the tiny amount of dust in the office magically attaching itself to its surface in seconds.
4) The PS3 joypad is very light and the tilt system is very responsive. We like.
5) The start up is amazingly fast. And game load times were faster than expected. In fact, PS3 does both at about the same speed of PSP. ie, Long load times due to the massive Blu-ray disc? Nope. Simply not an issue.
6) Andy's fingers kept sliding off the shoulder buttons. But that's because his fingers are slippery.

Sounds pretty good. I like the idea of it being really quite and fast. I wish they commented on whether or not it got very hot. My 360 literally heats my small room up.

The part about the load times are slow. If you watch the video they have posted, the game takes about 11 seconds to even get a screen loaded up and is still loading. But with more data, what can you expect.

Damn, they took out the video

A firend sent me the link this morning, and I watched the video - it was an inbedded Youtube video, although I guess its been taken down because Sony asked them to? Or perhaps a nice case of viral marketting to make people question it and talk about it more, search for the video on youtube etc etc...

Essentially all the video showed was them booting it up, moving through the interface, which essentially looked and worked exactly the same as the PSPs front end. I was encouraged when they wrote fasty start up and little loading times, but thats NOT the impression I got from the video - it took at least 10 seconds to boot, and once starting to load something spent a good 3-4 seconds with completely black screen, then flashed white twice quickly (presumably changing screen resolution and the tv adjusting? then another 3-4 seconds before doing anything else, I assume this is where a loading / logo screen for the game would have come up, but they cut the video short before any game was shown.

At least they note that the system is quiet, I hope thats true - the first batch of PS2s were so noisy you could hardly hear the game :kekeke: the fact its heavy doesn't bother me, but if the shiny surface picks up finger prints and dust as much as they indicate, that will really annoy a lot of people and probably go some way to stop it becoming the center of everyone's living space as Sony hope it will....

[edit] "Please bear in mind that this is a photograph of a TV and the actual game looks a million times better than this." lol I just noticed that - funny how no-one said that about the gears of war hd demo filmed on a big screen... I don't see what difference it makes, you can see the quality of the graphics polygons etc on a clear picture of a tv?

Well at least I wasn't alone in counting how long the system took to boot up the game. After watching it again, the count is around 15 seconds before you get to a playable screen. I love how the article says otherwise.

Yup - thats pretty bad. However its still early days, I don't expect PS3 hardware to be in a fit state to buy until about a year after its release, probably just in time for a price cut - and thats when I'll buy one. Exactly the same happenned with the ps and ps2, and to a similar extent the 2 xboxes. Going by Nintendos track record the wii should be a safe bet for build quality from the off, but I know somehow or another I'll end up with all 3 consoles anyway in the long run :)

Agreed that those factors are more important - but seriously a friend of mine had a ps2 on launch day and the noise coming from the thing was unforgivable, completely distracting. They improved it for later batches though, and the new slimlines & the old dc fans are both fine by me for noise level. I wonder how far technology will progress before we go back to consoles that run silently and load instantly like the 8-16 bit systems :eek_2: :oh_no:

The real problem is Sony's record of unreliable hardware. Chances are the first year will be plagued with problems like the Xbox360. I'll wait about 2 years and $200+ cheaper price.

The demo version of Gran Turismo HD Premium at the Tokyo Game Show took a couple of seconds to load between selecting your car etc and then starting the actual game.

considering the system just went into production today, they didn't play the finished product, so who cares?

There are reports from CeaTeC (Japanese Consumer Electronics Show) that Sony has been telling people/media that PS3 final production 'just started.'

probably to counter the overheating claims which led to a stock value drop yesterday.

Yes... PSM is such an unbiased source...

actually, yes they are....sure, its a playstation only mag, but when psp and ps2 both first came out, there were multiple instances where they stated how bad the launches were, poor initial games and selection, and whenever a new game or peripheral came out, wheter it be sony or 3rd party, if it sucks, they say it does. They may be slightly biased, but nowhere near Nintendo Power biased.
