I have a bunch of older gaming mags (EGM, Gameplayers, Game Pro, Gamefan) dating back to the late '80s early '90s and a lot of them are full of Neo Geo ads and reviews. I figure that a lot of you also have stock piles of vintage game magazines as well. What I'm proposing is that we all start scanning whatever articles, ads and reviews we find and start building a collection. If Shawn wouldn't mind hosting them we can ad them to the forum so we'll have an archive of the Neo in print.

I'm already searching the internet for these images.

I'll created a page on my site and host them for now.

Just scan what you have and post it here.

Don't know where you host, but if it gets too large in terms of space requirements or bandwidth, I can host files if you need. :)

Sounds like a great project!

Whatever is easiest .... just didn't know what kind of bandwidth and storage you had available on your server.

Let me know :) I can host them, no problem.

If you want... I can put them all in a directory and just throw up a super basic front end and then if you want to link through from your site and have the nice project explanation and so forth, that would be cool. Whatever you think would work best.

I'm scanning at 400 dpi and saving as jpegs. I can always reduce the dpi but I wanted to make sure the originals were high quality. I have 16 items scanned so far including a nice 2 page spread on SamSho 3 from the Feb. 96 issue of Gamefan.

We can host them on JNX too if you want.

Sure. I'll try to get something up in the next day or two here for it. Would you want on it's own page or do you want to just put in downloads?

So what are the sizes of your jpegs now? and what are the pixel dimensions?

Just deciding on some ideas on how we can display them in a neat way.... was thinking about something like we have for the Inserts on JNX right now (in teh downloads section... an overlay view + download linkage).

Cool... I can always scale down to a size that is still readable but won't trash the load times on that page and then have the full size linked for the download at the bottom of the overlay.

If they are still need to be bigger or we accumulate a ton, I think we would still be alright.

Michael, send me some dimensions (pixel dimensions) and some file sizes of your initial examples when you get a chance so I can decide the best way to code them in there.

Thanks :)

Sounds like a good idea. I've got time this week. I can dig through some old EGM's and gamefans, VG+CE+ others. I've got an old Crystalis mini-hint book with a coffee stain somewhere around here too I can try to find.

I might not have too much though - I threw out a good share of my old magazines a little while back.

Might I suggest we share a communal photobucket/tinypic account for this purpose? Or is that not a good idea/ too small/violates ToU? We can PM the password to contributors in this thread.

Varies from scan to scan. Some are 2 page spreads, some are 1 page articles and some are small blurbs. All are scanned at 400 dpi. I could just put together some zip files once I'm done and give them to you that way.

I think doing a photobucket isn't really necessary as we have a few really nice servers we can do this on and avoid the overhead of those services adn all the ads etc. I also believe we would end up with some issues possibly since they are scans of publications.

I think we could start with something simple... post the file here or can email it to me ... if we really want a photo gallery type setup for them (as long as everyone uses image files over pdfs) we can just run a gallery on the server and have the password PM'd as needed. But I would definitely avoid those large scale photo services!

Yeah could you do that then sometime (no rush) and that way I can play with them a bit and throw up some examples. Thanks Michael.

I'm unsure what nintendo ports of Neo games came out, but if these are desired too, I've got Nintendo Power from issue 1 up until Gamecube became prominent sitting in a box in the basement.

Once I get a stock pile scanned in I'll start sending you some zip files. Thanks for offering to host this project.

I'm just trying to give something back to a community that's given me a lot.

I currently have 74 scans done clocking in at 504 megs. I'm not even out of 1994 on my EGM's. I'm scanning anything and everything related to SNK (including ports). I think I'm just going to have to send this stuff to you on disc. It's just going to be too big to transmit it any other way.

I have no damn scanner!

Great idea though - I can send any magazines I have to you to be scanned.

You're only a stone throw away.

Let me check my parents house for my stuff....

That would work fine.

Would anyone be willing to scan some stuff from an issue of NGF? I've always been curious as to its content even though it's all in Japanese.

I have to reformat my home PC over the next few days so that's going to slow things down a little but I did manage to back up the scans I have (700+ megs so far).

Thankfully we have a large format scanner at my workplace so I'll scan on my lunch breaks until my home PC is up and running.
