Can the buttons of the old stick control be replaced?

Sure can. Finding original replacements is typically a challenge, but you can also use 24mm Seimitsu/Sanwa buttons if you’re comfortable soldering.

I highly recommend it. I hate the original buttons so much.

For the new buttons to fit into the old stick housing, do they have to be 24mm? Which brand of push buttons is better sanwa or seimitsu?

Both Sanwa and Seimitsu make fantastic buttons. It's personal preference in most cases but I'd guess most people use Sanwa for this.

Seimitsu buttons tend not to be as convex as Sanwa. Given the recessing of where the buttons sit, Sanwa are probably preferable here.
