Everyone has their favourite. It's no use bashing a game and favouring another, just to bitch about the games. Every KOF can be the best one, depends on everybody's taste.
The KOF 99 is my favourite -2nd position, 1st being KOF 98- because I first played it in Japan in Fukuoka the year it was released. I got into small KOF events, tournaments and stuffs, where I got totally crushed by awesome japanese players -needless to say my KOF skills are abysmal-
So, when you are not a combo player like me, KOF 99 is very interesting because, with a bit of skill, you can easily pull out powerful moves, without being forced to combo and combo and combo all over the place.
We're playing KOF, not Killer Instinct.
I respect the 99 for that since it gives me the feeling that I am a good player, even when difficulty level is set up to level 6.
"Beauty" -of the designs, backgrounds, characters, sceneries...- itself is subject to the opinion of anyone. You may put every background under scrutiny and find a million reasons to justify your "I don't like that!" or "This is the ultimate background, man!" Once again, depends on your preferences.
And, as I don't want to leave you like this, here are my Pros and Cons about KOF99:
Pros - Funny gameplay -striker-
New designs -Clark, Ralf, Kyo...-
New powerful characters -Bao, Juhn...-
Slow and accurate moves, helping you to know exactly what you're doing at a given time
And a lot of other reasons
Cons - Slow (S)DMs, not hard to pull out but that take a hell of a long time to be performed on screen
Unsufferable stage musics
Removal of the traditional Chin Gentsai outfit
Kyo1 and Kyo2 -useless, could have been replaced by, for example, Saisyu and Yamazaki-
And some more reasons
Well, this is it for me. Hope I didn't bore you too much. We all have our favourite KOF. My Holy Trinity would be: 98, 99 and 2000.
Enjoy your SNK games.
