That makes a lot more sense, now. I'm excited that it's going to tie everything together. Right now there's like 3 separate things going on - dominion, klingons, and the maquis.

I just watched the O'Brien episode last night where he was implanted with memories of spending 20 years in prison. That was such a WTF episode. Poor guy gets bounced around time and space, then gets memories implanted of spending 20 years in a prison (where he also kills somebody), his wife leaves for months at a time (and talks to dudes about problems in her marriage), and he's always in situations where he's in life-or-death battle, or been captured.

I really liked the way the Klingon trial was directed. I was waiting the whole time for Sisko to drop a bomb, a la Picard-style, and he didn't disappoint at the end. "Step onto my battlefield" - that was so fucking gangster.

Those episodes with O'Brien were nicknamed by the writers as "O'Brien must suffer" episodes. Probably because he's the closest to the "everyman" on the show--more so than anyone on TNG ever was. He's the guy who wasn't a commissioned officer. He was a grunt and worked his way up as a grunt.

I started watching Deep Space Nine last week, and even the apparently 'bad' first season has been pretty enjoyable, with a few really great episodes like Duet knocking it out of the park.

I'm about 8 episodes into season 2 now.

I think you're thinking of Next Gen. Season 1 of DS9 wasn't all bad.

Going to start watching the animated series pretty soon, if anyone cares to join me.

Oh man, I LOVED the episode where they spliced in te DS9 story with the original Star Trek. That was way too cool.

Although it did get awkward when Bashir was thinking about screwing his great grandmother.

Yeah, great episode. I Netflixed the original to rewatch it before the DS9 episode and they did a marvelous job of integrating the two.

The explanation of Klingons looking different was golden.

That was when you knew Enterprise was grasping for ratings by doing fan service: the actually did a series of episodes explaining what happened but it's pretty lame and Enterprise's Klingon's are more caricatures than Klingons. They're actually complex in DS9

Assuming you're going in order: What did you think of the return to the House of Quark? Miles and Keiko have some pretty honest relationship issues.

Also (sorry to keep bugging you), what did you think of "The Quickening" (Bashir on the plague planet).

One last warning: "Let He Who Is Without Sin..." is pretty bad and is the black sheep of season 5.

I love that Quark was able to snag a Klingon woman. I thought that having Worf "fight" for him was a bit of a stretch, though. I don't know why, but I'm really bothered with Worf and Jadzia hooking up. I guess I'm still holding out hope that Bashir will be able to nail her somewhere down the road.

The Quickening was an awesome episode. I love how bittersweet the end was --it was pretty dark. TNG would've taken a whole different approach on that, I think. I liked it.

That Risa episode with Worf flip-flopping was awful. I watch the bulk of my episodes in bed on my ipad (thank god for Netflix), and I think I actually fell asleep 4 or 5 times through it.

One thing that bugs me is how Kai Wynne is still, well, fucking Kai. She tried to assassinate somebody for christ's sake. I can't stand her condescending attitude. I wish Nerys would skull-bash her already.

About to start Season 5, Episode 11 - "The Darkness and the Light." Blowing through these episodes, but I love them. I'm going to feel empty when I'm finished with the series.

Yeah, they intentionally wanted to show a failure. I think they realized exactly how brutal the script was getting so they added the benefit for that child.

The actress really nails the role --Louise Fletcher is no slouch, she won an Oscar for Best Actress playing Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Jack Nicholson won his first Best Actor opposite her).

I was the same way which is why I'm kind of living vicariously though your impressions as you go through it. There's also a guy on the Onion A/V Club who's going through and reviewing each episode but he's only on season 3 at the moment.

Children of Time - Another "wow" episode that really nails it. I knew after the old Odo told Nerys she can't go through with it that he would somehow be the architect for the failure to stick with the timeline.

My penis also ruined things for me when I got a bit too interested in Terry Farrell, and found out she leaves in season 6 because I was creeping her wiki page. I won't make that mistake again.

:shame:

Hopefully it was just that much and not the way she leaves.

If it is on there, I don't remember reading how she left. I'm safe from that info.

I always loved her tattoos. I've forgotten how she leaves the show as well. Would love to get back on this show in 2013.

So where are you right now?

Also: What do you think of Weyoun? (it's the same actor as Ferengi liquidator Brunt)

BTW: I also really liked how they handled old Odo in Children of Time: he even looks more human, as you'd expect he'd have gotten better at replicating human form. Rene Auberjonois really can act.

Ha, I never put both of them together. Now that I know that it's the same guy, I won't be able to not notice it. Weyoun is an interesting character, and his eyes creep me the hell out.

The older Odo reminded me of a kind grandpa. I was really surprised by how well he acted in that role. It really made the character shine.

Right now I just finished season 5. I can't wait to fire up season 6 tonight. I'm kind of bummed I only have 2 more seasons.

And they only get better. Some say the show isn't quite the same in Season 7, I disagree. I thought DS9 just kept getting better and the finale is a 9-episode arc.

Still, season 6 probably has the most famous episodes (and scenes) in the entire series. It also opens with a 6-episode arc.

Definitely keep posting your impressions :)

EDIT: I still sometimes chant "Martok". Such a badass character and name.

Spoiler:
There's some really major stuff that happens in these seasons so spoiler tags might be a good idea in certain cases. I do love how Garak and Dukat become highly complex characters.

I actually put the original TOS episode and DS9 remake side by side to see the differences.:p

Loved the episode of Ds9 that involved those star fleet cadet commanding the defiant class NCC Valiant

The best sessions of DS9 was the dominion wars with the galaxy class kicking ass and the traumatic beat down and loss of the defiant.

I just watched the ep where nerys and odo get together in the holosuit. It's probably my favorite so far. I was waiting for odo to turn into a pile of goo and disappear when he realized she was real. Their first kiss was also the most awkward thing I've ever seen on tv.

Wait... so assuming you're going in order you just watched In the Pale Moonlight?
Spoiler:
No comment on what's considered possibly the least goodie-two-shoes Trek of them all? It's a faaaaake. This is the show that either causes people to want to burn the show down or embrace it. This is why 'Duf always calls Sisko a murderer.

Or Sacrifice of the Angels?
Spoiler:
which wraps up Ziyal... doesn't Dukat become one of the saddest characters at the end of that episode?

Or Far Beyond the Stars?
Spoiler:
Where everyone from the show appears without make-up and was almost brought back for the very end of the show... they almost made the last shot of an elder Benny Russell walking off a soundstage with the script for DS9, implying this was all his eventual stories we were seeing.

Now this should make sense:

Among other episodes...

Are there other people who haven't watched the series besides me?

Spoiler:
I guess we'll talk in spoiler tags then. I actually liked the episode where they frame the dominion. I'm not understanding what you mean by saying it's fake. Does this not happen? Regardless, I don't see how you can call Sisko a murderer, since Garat was the one who planted the bomb.

I sort of felt bad for Dukat, and then a bit more when he and Sisko were stranded on the planet together. He redeemed himself when he sent Nerys that message about her mother. That made him more badass, to me. I actually thought Nerys was a bit of a cunt in that episode, immediately going on the offensive toward her mother. It really put in perspective her knee-jerk reactions toward anything Cardassian.

Far beyond the stars was a weird episode for me. I kind of drifted in and out of sleep while this was on. I'll probably go back later and re-watch it. I remember a lot of things not making sense, and generally being confused throughout the whole thing.

I'm kind of tired with the episodes that have characters in a holodeck the whole time, like you're not supposed to be able to suspect that it's even happening. The Bashir episode where he's interrogated was a snooze-fest, and the pay-off was a pretty big letdown.

I laughed my ass off with the episode where Worf got shit on my Sisko for not completing his mission and saving Dax. There's multiple times on TNG and DS9 where he's told the shit he does is going into his record. Poor guy can't get a break.

You might be the only one here. But, for what it's worth, you and Bobak have inspired a re-watch over here. I'm watching some of the earlier episodes for the first time in over a decade, and they really hold up. The "Past Tense" episodes feel especially relevant, if not subtly poignant, today.

I think some haven't really given the show much of a look so may have not known the more major spoilers that litter the back half of the series.

Heh, back to the spoilers:
Spoiler:
Actually, the "it's a fake" is a reference to the most quotable line of that entire episode, not to my feelings on the episode (I loved it). It's. A. FAAAAAAAAKE!

Yeah, I like that, from basically season one's Duet (with the Cardie who wanted to pretend to be a war criminal), the show's done a good job of slowing building the idea that, y'know, Bajorans can be assholes too.

Definitely give the Benny Russell episode another chance. It's a bit melodramatic (hence the vid comparing it to "it's a fake"), but it really let Avery Brooks dive into a role that he clearly cared about. Watch it with the Memory Alpha wiki handy so you can see which actor is which if you can't recognize Martok or Worf without the make-up.

Poor, poor Worf--would anyone ever have guessed that he and O'Brien would have the most complex stories of any of the TNG cast, save for Picard?

Watching the final episode of season 6. I'm kind of upset that there's only one season left. I've used this series to study, practice guitar and piano to, and sometimes even fall asleep to.

The last few episodes have been pretty good. The Miles/Keko episode where Molly gets caught in that time shift was excellent, although I wish it would've ended...well, differently. I also liked the episode where they chase Lisa Cusak's transmissions. I loved the ending. That's my kind of Star Trek.

I really could've done without seeing Quark as a woman. That was such a bad episode (imo). Seeing Quark like that is probably the most uncomfortable thing I've ever seen, and I've been on the internet..

Yeah, that's probably counted as among the worst episodes of DS9: the background is they wrote it and picked the script to be a farce but Armin Shimerman (Quark) and Bashir (who directed) decided to make it a more serious episode and, well, yeah... a tricky thing to begin with and it messes up (though I didn't hate it as much as others).

By far the best Ferengi episode is The Magnificent Ferengi: it even had Iggy Pop as a Vorta. Was that season 5?
