Am I still the only one out there playing Oblivion?

This game is fantastic if you like how free form it is and don't mind dungeon crawling and grinding.

I just completed (finally) the main storyline earlier last week (i'd done all the other achievement related quests) and then played through the main storyline of the Shivering Isles and got all of the achievements there you can get on a single play through.

For anyone wondering if Shivering Isles is worth it - then let me tell you, yes, yes it is. Especially if you can get the released in stores hard copy for Xbox 360 because it also contains Knights of the Nine, which (from what i've read) is a pretty kick ass quest in itself.

Also about Shivering Isles - if you own an Xbox 360 and a copy of Oblivion, go out to your local video game rental store and see if they have the "GAME OF THE YEAR Edition" of Oblivion. This includes a second disc containing Shivering Isles/Knights of the Nine. I have confirmed that you can rent the GotY edition and simply install the Shivering Isles/KotN expansion to your hard drive. Then all you need to do is return the game. I don't know about your guys local rental places, but i go to one where if you return a game or movie the day after you rent it you get credit to your account.

So I got Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine for like $2-3 dollars. But let me say that, yeah it's honestly worth the price tag they want for it ($30).

Shivering Isles features a lot of quests similar to that of regular Oblivion...but the setting is different and you have new locations so it's a nice change from boring old Tamriel. Also there a new items to be had including new ingredients for alchemists. I maxed out my alchemy like 40 or more hours ago, so the new ingredients didn't interest me that much, other than the fact that a fairly common plant in the Shivering Isles has "restore health" as it's first property - pretty kick ass for master alchemists.

I'm a scrub though and really only make Restore Health, Restore Fatigue, Restore Magicka, and Damage Health potions.

I plan to complete Knights of the Nine after I find all the Daedric Artifacts in Oblivion (like 14 quests?). Now that i've beat the game i've been checking out the Oblivion wikis pretty heavily for other shit to do in the game. Basically i'm looking for quests to get cool items or quests that were downright fun (which pointed me to the direction of the Daedric quests...i had no idea those existed).

Anyone get any of the other extra DLC? a lot of it sounds dumb, it's basically a bunch of houses that are probably more useful early on in the game. I'm going to download the Wizard's Tower one though, because it looks kick ass and i'm tired of living in the Slum that is the Imperial City waterfront (thought it has served me well).

Maybe I should just play an MMO?

Anyway. Just wondering if anyone else was still playing Oblivion. I'm still having a kick ass super fun time doing it and I even stopped playing for like 6 months.

Some time ago, I posted a guide for an ultimate character. Although, I cannot edit the original post, I came to realize the custom enchanted items are not necessary since the 105% magic resist does in fact negate any bonus damage from enchanted weapons.

Still, great game. I put 500hrs+ on my first character, 200hrs+ on a second and a third, then about 80hrs+ on a fourth. I'd like to start yet another character since I lost the data on my god-like fourth character, but with the PSU-crack in full effect and Too Human being around the corner, I may not play Oblivion again for awhile.

It's still the best game of this generation of systems, imo.

I'm only at around 130 hours, and I have some much more stuff to do ingame!

Knowing what I now know I would probably make a completely different character and level in a completely different fashion, but i'm suitably powerful enough at the moment (don't have too much trouble with any monsters as long as I buff myself with potions).

As far as skills, I need to work on Marksman still - it's even one of my Major Skills (Archer Class) but ranged combat isn't as powerful as it should/could unless you have an enchanted bow and enchanted arrows (i poison the arrows too!). So when the shit hits the fan, I use a sword because it's so much more powerful.

My major skills are all combat related, so if i get bored I could work on using blunt weapons or even hand to hand.

I'd love to be a master marksman though.

Amazing that you spent that much time on the game. I don't know that I could do a second character. If I did i honestly don't know what i'd do as I don't really relish the idea of playing the same old quests over and over again.

Some of them such, particularly the ones where you need to gain entrance to the Mages Guild and the Fighters Guild is kinda boring.

Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood (at least the earlier missions) were awesome though.

For some reason i HATE the Oblivion gates. My friend shut them all because he is crazy, but I only did the 9 necessary to beat the game.

Great game though.

I have played a little of this and thought it was fantastic. It is the type of game that I would love to have time to play but with life/kids, I just can't see that happening. (I have never tried an MMO either)

It (time) is the one concern I have about picking up Fallout 3 but I guess I will just play when I can squeeze it in.

Nice Character, only way he would be better if he could Breathe Underwater, which i've found to be....slightly useful as an Argonian (immune to poison and a high resist disease are nice).

I forgot about the Wrist Irons...I believe I have two pairs now. I just recently stumbled across another pair in the Shivering Isles.

All of my Magic skills are really weak and magic is a side of the game i haven't messed around with much aside from an occasional custom spell or enchanting armor to do lame things (usually raise strength).

I need to read up on UESPWIKI.

I do have 85 armor at the moment though (is this the max?) because I have a full set of Amber Armor (light armor from Shivering Isles, it was actually fun to get because you have to acquire pieces of Amber and it's even tougher to get all Enchanted Amber Armor (well you could enchant it yourself...but the Smith will enchant it if you have the Appropriate Amber Armor "Matrix."

I remember spending over 100 hours on the PC version back around the time it came out. I don't have the game anymore though. I barely touched the main story.

What I did was played the main story up to the point where you get both Martin and Jauffrey and stopped there. Since they're NPCs that are important to the story they are invincible, so having them with me for all of the side quests made everything much easier. I figured out that they gain levels as well. The only downside to them is that it isn't possible to give them armor. But they do loot corpses/objects for weapons if their current one breaks, and any arrows that hit them are added to their inventory. It's also possible to add weapons to their inventory by "stealing" from them.

I also remember having lots of fun as a vampire. It's not bad at all as long as you remember to feed every now & then and not sleep/wait. If a quest required me to be somewhere at a certain time, I would simply quick-travel somewhere and do stuff instead of sleeping/waiting.

I never played Shivering Isles or Knights of the Nine, but it sounds like they're pretty good. Maybe I'll get the game again, but I'd rather get it for console this time. It would have to be the GotY edition for PS3 though, since the US 360 version won't work on a Japanese 360...

I just beat Knights of the Nine - that was actually one of the better (series of) quests in the games in my opinion, plus you get some pretty damned sweet loot and some nice greater/lesser powers.

Personally I felt the main storyline was pretty "bleh" simply because I found the Oblivion Gates to be boring and generally tedious work. I didn't like that you had to close a gate in front of each city, that was soo lame. The other quests associated with the main storyline weren't that bad though.

I too didn't approach the main storyline until basically after i'd completed all 4 guilds storylines and hand about 90+ hours in the game.

My favorite quests in the game?

Shivering Isles Main Storyline (Sheogorath is the best Daedric Prince)
Thieves Guild Storyline (best quests in the game, hands down)
Dark Brotherhood Storyline (more so the early quests but I enjoyed the storyline overall because it didn't play out how i thought it was going to)

Fighters Guild was ok...but it was mostly just fighting and I didn't think the story was that cool.

Mages Guild storyline was better than fighters, but the initial quests were tedious (get the approval of all the Mages Guild leaders) and since I wasn't using a magic based character i really didn't benefit too much other than gaining access to the Arcane University where I could create spells and enchant items.

The Frostcrag Spire (Wizard's Tower) DLC is awesome and I highly reccomend it. It's really a great home for someone starting out in Oblivion, especially if you want access to magic but don't want to do the mages guild storyline. You can enchant and create spellls there once you purchase the appropriate upgrade.

Plus there is a garden there, and a table that if you do alchemy next to will increase your alchemy skill by 15 (so i do all my alchemy next to the table now and it has made way better potions than i've ever been able to make before).

Now that I beat Knights of the Nine i'd like to recover all the remaining Daedric Artifacts and work on some stuff in the Shivering Isles.

Damn fun game.

I can't wait to see Elder Scroll V if and when it comes out...hopefully now that Fallout 3 is done Bethesda will start on ESV.

I would totally play as a Vampire if waiting/quick travelling in the day time didn't hurt you. Thats absolutely ridiculous.

Oblivion is great...

If you like doing the SAME THING over and over and over again.

I liked it for about 15 hours or so, and then it got really boring and repetitive. The story is weak, and the storytelling is crap, so there was no incentive whatsoever to keep playing.

I'm pretty sure quick-traveling doesn't hurt you (but waiting does). I remember doing it all the time without getting damaged. As long as you feed and not rest/wait, moving around in the day-time shouldn't have any effect on you. Maybe they changed it for the 360/PS3 versions?

Oblivion isn't for you if you like games with a heavy emphasis on story telling...Oblivion at it's core is simply a dungeon crawl where you seek out new items and loot and level up your character to ridiculous proportions.

The free form nature of the game is sort of the point.

If I ever wanted to play as a Vampire i'd download the Vile Lair DLC because you have a prisoner in your home you can feed from, lolz.

Did you find the Vampire specifc powers useful at all?

I'm not tied to heavy story telling really..

The problem is that those dungeons you are crawling are exactly the same as the previous 25 dungeons you just did.

It needs either more variety, or a compelling story. without either, its a dull waste of time.

I remember that some of them were. I also liked that it would boost most/all of your stats. It was like gaining 5~10 extra levels, or something.

Did they ever confirm that this is going to have a different leveling system or the same busted-ass one?

It’s not officially announced yet but the release is inevitable since the screenshots got accidentally leaked from the developers website. I’d hope there’s some quality of life improvements, although level 50 mud crabs or rats never bothered me much.

I'm down for it if it does a lot of QoL work, but I actually kind of dig the older look to it so the visuals don't factor in much for me.

Last time I played Oblivion was on the Xbox One X and the 4k patch actually looked pretty nice (from memory)

It’s like when movies went to VHS (home release original), dvd (hd rerelease), and now blu-ray (4k rererelease).

Companies are not your friends, they just want a return from their cash cows (you) to their masters (shareholders).

That said, communism isn’t a good foundation to make great games from either.
